Organization-level Youth Engagement Approach for Substance Misuse Prevention
Description

Phase 1 will consist of a small pilot Open Trial (OT). The objective of Phase 1 is to develop an organization-level Youth Engagement (YE) prevention strategy and implement it in a community-based organization to test feasibility and acceptability in an open trial with one organization. This will include developing a manual for systematically incorporating YE into prevention efforts in community settings. Phase 2 will consist of a small pilot Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT). Four prevention organizations will be randomized either to include Youth Engagement in prevention efforts (treatment) or not (control). The study team will attempt to match the treatment and control groups on relevant characteristics such as geographic location (e.g., urban, rural), population served (e.g., church-based, school-based), and/or prior Youth Engagement involvement. The objective of the second phase of this study is to evaluate the preliminary effectiveness of YE as a prevention strategy for opioid misuse in a small pilot randomized control trial (RCT). This pilot study will examine the effects of the YE prevention strategy on (a) organization-level outcomes, such as perceived value added to prevention programming and (b) individual-level outcomes such as personal skills and attitudes as well as knowledge and attitudes about substances including opioids. Up to 15 leaders/staff and 45 youth/young adults (60 people overall) will be recruited for the study.

Youth Engagement Study: Intervention to Increase HIV Treatment Engagement and Adherence for Young People Living With HIV
Description

This pragmatic adaptive clinical trial will test the effects of a Stigma-Motivational-Decision intervention designed to increase HIV treatment engagement, retention, and medication adherence for substance using adolescents and young adults (AYA) living with HIV who are not in clinical care. The intervention uses a uniquely unified counseling approach at multiple points along the HIV continuum of care. The trial will use multiple modes of outreach including social media, passive media, clinic records, and chain referrals to seek and identify HIV positive AYA who are HIV untreated, under-dosed, or unsuppressed (HIV-U3). Participants will receive phone-delivered Stigma-Motivational-Decision counseling intervention sessions to achieve engagement or re-engagement in HIV care, treatment adherence and control of their HIV infection. Once viral control is achieved, participants will receive a low-cost approach to sustaining long-term retention in care and medication adherence.

Strengthening Healthy Relationships Among Apsaalooke Youth
Description

This pilot project uses community based participatory research principles to build upon cultural strengths to develop a feasibility of intervention to promote relationality and connectedness among Apsáalooke youth. This project worked closely with a Community Advisory Board (CAB) members to develop all stages of the project. The CAB identified 5th grade as an important age to focus. The feasibility study is developing pilot activities related to respecting promoting intergenerational, family, community and land connectedness among Crow youth.

PHF Problematic Sexual Behavior of Youth Family Engagement
Description

Efficacious child mental health services are only helpful if families engage in services; however, as many as 75% of families in need never establish contact with a mental health professional and greater than half of families fail to attend their first appointment. Fortunately, interventions have been developed to increase the likelihood that families will participate in treatment. Despite the development of these interventions, no research to date has evaluated these strategies with a critically important population, youth with problematic sexual behaviors (PSB). PSBs in children are a substantial public health concern, as greater than one-third of child sexual abuse cases are committed by other youth. Evidence based practices (EBP's) that include direct engagement of caregivers in services for youth PSB have strong efficacy, with recidivism rates of two percent. Thus, a therapeutic response that successfully engages families is necessary to promote community safety. Research has indicated that engagement of families in PSB treatment has greater complications due to managing internal and external experiences of shame, stigma, and misperceptions of youth. Therefore, the present study seeks to determine the impact of a first contact intervention to assess if strategies aid in the engagement of families in treatment for youth PSB as compared to referral as usual. This will be accomplished by conducting a small-scale Randomized Control Trial. This project is the first step in an innovative line of research that will provide practical strategies for practitioners to utilize in order to successfully recruit, retain, and heal families of youth with PSB.

Description

The current study tests the feasibility and effectiveness of a youth intervention designed to provide meaningful leadership opportunities and to address barriers to equity, through the acquisition of civic leadership and development skills as well as mindfulness practice, LEAP-M: Leadership, Engagement, and youth Activism Program with Mindfulness. The goal of our proposal is to determine whether the Leadership, Engagement, and youth Activism Program with Mindfulness.(LEAP-M) curriculum, which was developed with youth of color, is a feasible and effective intervention for fostering civic leadership, civic development, and wellbeing. We seek to understand whether LEAP-M can support wellbeing for youth of color as a strategy to combat structural racism at the school- and neighborhood-levels, increase youth mental, emotional, and behavioral (MEB) health and decrease health disparities in youth of color.

We propose to examine the effects of mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) on outcomes of health related quality of life, disease symptoms, and biological correlates of stress in a sample of young adults with cancer. The proposed work will serve as an essential foundation for launching a program of clinical stress reduction research with this traditionally underserved population and has the potential to lead to the discovery of specific, modifiable psychosocial, behavioral, and biological mechanisms from which to address the problem of health disparities with this group.

A New Clinical Model for the Engagement of Latinx Youth with Suicidal Behavior
Description

This study will test a model of providing treatment to Latinx/Hispanic youth, who experience suicidal thoughts and behavior, and their caregivers. An affirmative and culturally relevant treatment will be provided to all youth and half of the families will be assigned to the additional support of a community health worker (CHW). Youth symptoms and family engagement to treatment will be followed for nine months. The potential benefit of adding the CHW intervention will be assessed.

A Music and Visual Arts Digital Intervention in Teenagers to Promote Healthy Engagement With Social Media.
Description

The primary goal of this interventional study is to explore whether 3 months of arts-based digital interventions can change the way in which teenagers (13-16 years of age) use social media and are affected by them. The main questions it aims to answer are: * Can we give teenagers new, stimulating, and more goal-oriented ways of using social media through arts-based digital trainings and active discussions around social media? * Can these arts-based digital interventions also help teenagers to overcome the negative consequences of social media overuse (such as depression, anxiety, and reduced attention and cognitive performance)? Secondarily, this study also aims to explore the brain and behavioral traits associated with these arts-based interventions to better understand how they work. Researchers will compare a music composition intervention with two other interventions: an active control intervention based on visual-arts instead of music (i.e., photography), and a passive approach to control for the mere pass of time. Participants will: * Complete a baseline and a post-intervention evaluation where researchers will obtain measures of cognitive performance (attention and executive functions, mainly), mood, mental health, brain structure and function, and social media usage and attitudes towards these platforms. * Complete weekly measures regarding their use of social media platforms and their mood. * Complete 3-month arts-based composition / edition intervention (based on music or visual-arts/photography), or the equivalent time with no intervention (passive control group). The motivation of this study was driven by the observation that, in recent years, there has been an increasing use of social media and digital devices in teenagers, while the scientific community still does not fully understand the effects of the overuse of these digital means and platforms. Moreover, some of the negative effects described to be associated with the passive overuse of social media tap on the same brain structures that are benefited by musical and artistic trainings. Hence, we thought it could be worth trying to use arts-based training to help teenagers compensate for or overcome the negative effects of social media at the neural, cognitive, mood and mental health levels. This study introduces novelty through three main aspects. Firstly, it employs a digital art creation approach that requires no classical art training, making it more accessible and less intimidating. Secondly, it incorporates commonly used digital devices (e.g., phones/tablets) and motivating environments into the learning process, integrating the development of new digital skills and the practice of critical thinking around the use of SM into normal classroom activities. Finally, the study employs a multi-methodological approach to explore the brain mechanisms underlying mental-health and cognitive changes resulting from arts-based interventions. Finally, we believe that conclusions from SMART will: * set the basis for developing preventive and therapeutic interventions for depression and anxiety in teenagers, * promote educational programs that provide optimal tools for adolescents to navigate social media in a healthy manner, and * inspire educational policy.

mHealth App for Engagement in Care Among Youth Living With HIV
Description

In the US, fewer than 6% of all youth living with HIV (YLWH) achieve HIV viral suppression. However, health disparities among youth extend across the entire HIV care continuum in that there is a strong association between younger age and later HIV diagnosis, lower engagement in care, lower levels of antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence, and worse HIV clinical outcomes. In response to this critical public health dilemma, the investigators propose to develop a novel mobile health application ("app") to improve engagement in health care and ART adherence and to pilot test this mobile health app in 18-29-year-old YLWH residing in San Francisco. The aims of this study are to: Aim 1: Build on a theory-guided model and formative work to complete the development of a novel personalized mobile health app for improved HIV clinical outcomes among YLWH (includes field test of initial release to ensure adequate usability and engagement). Aim 2: Conduct a six-month single arm pilot study to examine WYZ feasibility and acceptability among YLWH ( N = 76) living in the San Francisco Bay Area. Finally, the investigators will conduct in-depth qualitative interviews with a subset of participants (N = 20) and clinical team members (N = 10) whose patients participated in the pilot study. The investigators hypothesize that this mobile health app will be feasible and acceptable and will result in improved HIV clinical outcomes. Upon completion, the investigators will be ready to test the efficacy of this app in a subsequent large-scale randomized control trial among a population that is disproportionately impacted by HIV and at elevated risk for poor clinical outcomes.

The current study explores the development and use of a family engagement intervention for psychiatrically hospitalized adolescents with emerging psychosis symptoms. The program is designed to increase understanding of mental health symptoms and promote motivation for engagement in outpatient services. Findings from this study may inform ways to effectively educate and engage youth at clinical high risk for psychosis, and their families, in treatment that may be critical for improving future functioning and outcomes.

Youth to Text or Telehealth for Engagement in HIV Care
Description

Youth To Text or Telehealth for Engagement in HIV Care (Y2TEC) is a randomized control pilot to assess the feasibility and acceptability of delivering a targeted problem-solving intervention to youth ages 18-29 living with HIV (YLWH) for improving HIV care engagement, mental health, and decreasing substance use. The intervention will be delivered to participants in two condition groups in remote telehealth sessions delivered via video-conference over 4 months. Participation in the study will last about 8 months. The investigators hypothesize that the Y2TEC intervention will be feasible and acceptable for YLWH, and will result in improved HIV clinical outcomes. If feasible and acceptable, it can be scaled up for a multi-site randomized clinical trial and ultimately offered in the clinical care of YLWH.

Effectiveness of the Care Coordination, Assessment, and Responsive Engagement Program for Transition-aged Adolescents (t-CARE) With ASD
Description

An analysis of data for adolescents and young adults diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) who are evaluated as part of the Care Coordination, Assessment, and Responsive Engagement for transition-aged adolescents (t-CARE) program which replaced the former Autism Life Care Model (ALCM), which was a clinical program implemented between Fall 2014 and April 2016. The individuals enrolled in the program will be administered a standardized assessment battery during each visit with the care coordinator or study coordinator. The proposed study will analyze data gathered during each of the assessment periods in order to check the efficacy and viability of the protocol.

CommitFit App to Facilitate Health Behavior Change in Clinic Adolescents

We conducted a 3-month RCT with 30 adolescents (aged 13-15 years) and their caregivers to evaluate the effectiveness of the novel mHealth app "CommitFit", which uses gamification to motivate users to log and achieve health behavior goals. The RCT had three arms: (1) CommitFit only users, (2) CommitFit$, adolescents were paid $0.05 for each point they earned, and (3) Control. Software analytics, surveys, BMI, and blood pressure were evaluated at baseline, 3 months, and 4 months.

The BH-Works Suicide Prevention Program for Sexual and Gender Minority Youth
Description

Youth suicide is a serious public health concern. Compared to their heterosexual and cisgender peers, sexual and gender minority (SGM) adolescents report higher rates of suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. Unfortunately, many barriers complicate the implementation of suicide prevention in SGM communities. SGM youth often report feeling unwelcome in traditional behavioral health service organizations. Consequently, treatment attendance and retention remain low. Instead, this population generally seeks mental health services in community organizations for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) youth. These organizations are often unprepared for this clinical challenge. The Behavioral Health-Works (BH-Works) suicide risk management system may offer a potential solution to this problem. BH-Works is an evidence-based, comprehensive youth suicide prevention program. It offers support for policy development, staff training, suicide and behavioral health screening, technology-assisted safety planning, an electronic patient referral system, real-time data analytics for program monitoring, and a learning collaborative structure to support sustainability. All functions are supported on a web-based software platform that facilitates cross-system communication, implementation, adoption, and expansion. In this project, the investigators will adapt this program for LGBTQ organizations and test feasibility, acceptability and preliminary effectiveness. This project builds upon robust partnerships with two diverse LGBTQ organizations in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and rural Southwest, Virginia) and their respective behavioral health (BH) partnering sites. To facilitate BH-Works adaptation for SGM adolescents, the investigators will employ the Enhancing Engagement trajectory from Lau's cultural adaptation framework. To pilot the program within LGBTQ organizations and their partners, the investigators will use an Effectiveness-Implementation Hybrid Type 2 design with a historical comparison group. Informed by the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research, the investigators will also pilot test a sequenced implementation strategy. This strategy focuses on promoting engagement, building partnerships, and creating sustainability. In Years 1 and 2, the investigators will collect treatment as usual data, and work with their partners to adapt BH-Works policy, content, practices, and workflow. The investigators will also train staff/providers in suicide risk management, family engagement and affirmative care. In Years 3 and 4, the investigators will test the adapted SGM BH-Works Program and examine several essential program targets (training impact, partnership development, software usability) and outcomes (successful referral, program satisfaction, caregiver involvement, suicide identification).

We will conduct a two-group randomized controlled trial to examine the eMocha DOT intervention with pediatric HT recipients.In this population, medication nonadherence remains a primary cause of late acute rejection (LAR) episodes, increased number of hospitalizations, graft failure, and patient mortality. Herein, we propose an innovative approach to promote medication adherence and improve patient and graft outcomes.

Testing the Causal Effects of a Civic Engagement Intervention on Health and Wellbeing Among Youth (I-ACTED)
Description

The purpose of this research is to understand how participating or not participating in an action civics curriculum may affect the health and wellbeing of young people. Participants will be chosen from students who attend certain schools that choose to participate in the action civics curriculum. Participation in this research involves completing surveys during class time in the Spring and Fall 2021-2022 semesters and then completing online surveys outside of class in the future.

Engaging Black Youth in Depression and Suicide Prevention Treatment Within Urban Schools
Description

Completing evidence-based treatments for depression has been shown to be particularly problematic for Black adolescents. If Black adolescents' depression treatment needs are to be met, the engagement challenges and the factors that lessen the success of treatment in the "real world" must be addressed. The investigators will examine the effectiveness of the Making Connections Intervention (MCI) and investigate key mediators of both engagement and response to treatment for depression. The MCI is a 1-2 session, evidence-based intervention designed to improve engagement, perceived relevance, and treatment satisfaction among depressed, Black adolescents. The study also uses tailored outreach strategies for adolescents and parents by including innovative digital content such as a web page/app along with other digital products. This study will address an important public health issue: How best to connect Black adolescents with depression to treatment in clinically meaningful ways, and how best to deliver evidence-based treatment to them through school-based services.

The Effects of Summer Employment on Disadvantaged Youth: Experimental Evidence
Description

Chicago's Department of Family and Support Services will be providing summer employment and social-emotional skill training to youth over the summer of 2012. The investigators are partnering with them to evaluate the effects of the program. The investigators will track applicants to the program through existing administrative databases to assess the short- and long-term effects of the government's program. The investigators hypothesize that the program will decrease violence involvement and criminal activity, increase schooling engagement, and increase future employment outcomes.

Enhancing Juvenile Drug Court Outcomes With Evidence-Based Practices
Description

Juvenile drug courts were developed in response to a perceived need to intervene more effectively with youth with substance abuse problems. Close collaboration between the court and substance abuse treatment provider is a defining component of the drug court model and is critical to helping youth achieve positive outcomes. Despite the proliferation of juvenile drug courts in recent years, however, evaluation of their capacity to reduce offender substance use and criminal activity has lagged. Moreover, the Institute of Medicine (IOM, 1998) and leading experts (McLellan, Carise, \& Kleber, 2003) have presented a bleak picture of the nation's capacity to meet the treatment needs of substance abusing individuals. Although community-based programs provide the backbone of substance abuse treatment in the nation, their capabilities have not kept up with major scientific advances in the development and validation of evidence-based substance abuse interventions. Building on our research findings and experience regarding juvenile drug court outcomes as well as the transport of evidence-based practices to community treatment settings, the purpose of this study is to develop and test a relatively flexible and low cost strategy for enhancing the outcomes of juvenile drug courts by integrating components of evidence-based treatments into existing substance abuse services. Specifically, this project aims to: Aim 1: Adapt existing intervention and training protocols from evidence-based practices (i.e., Contingency Management for adolescent substance abuse; family engagement strategies from evidence-based treatments of juvenile offenders) for integration into juvenile drug court sites. Aim 2: Conduct a study to examine youth (e.g., substance use and criminal behavior) and system level (e.g., intervention adherence, feasibility, retention and completion rates, consumer satisfaction, cost estimates) effects of implementing the intervention protocols in juvenile drug courts. Aim 3: Revise the intervention and training protocols in preparation for a Stage II study if findings are supportive.
