Mainstream Sleep Tracking Devices vs Polysomnography

The purpose of this study is to compare two popular portable sleep monitoring devices-the Fitbit Charge®, Jawbone UP®, and SleepTime smartphone app-to the "gold standard" Polysomnography (PSG). Parameters that will be analyzed include sleep onset latency, sleep efficiency, and sleep staging. Specifically, this study will investigate the validity of the Jawbone UP®, Fitbit Charge®, and SleepTime app in detecting sleep and wakefulness in comparison to conventional Polysomnography (PSG).

The Use of Multiple Sensors to Track Sleep in Nightshift Workers

Sleep is often a challenge for nightshift workers because their work and sleep schedules are inverted. Sleep is commonly measured using actigraphy, which is the standard measure of objective sleep in the general population; however, this method has substantial limitations for nightshift workers because the standard legacy algorithms only correctly identify 50.3% of daytime sleep. This significantly reduces the validity for nightshift workers. The purpose of this study is to test a novel method to expand actigraphy by using 1) a multi-sensor approach that 2) uses machine learning (ML) algorithms to increase the accuracy of detecting daytime sleep.

Influence of Yogic Breathwork on Sleep

The purpose of this research study is to determine the influence of a regular yogic breathing practice on sleep, and to find out primarily if a regular practice of 8-week yogic breathing would enhance sleep quality as well as if it would improve participant's quality of life, and reduce existing stress. Study participants will be randomized into two arms for different breathing practices.

Is My Sleep Tracker Tracking my Sleep?

The purpose of this research study is to collect health and physiological data using commercially available wristband fitness tracker devices (FitBit and Garmin devices) to help determine their accuracy and reliability at measuring percent of night spent in REM sleep, oxygen desaturation, and apnea hypopnea index compared with currently available methods of in-laboratory polysomnogram and home sleep testing.

Sleep and Tracking Effects in Pregnancy Study

Purpose: The investigators hypothesize that a simple, personalized, smartphone-based activity intervention using a wrist-based activity tracker will help high risk pregnant women reduce their stress during pregnancy. Participants: Pregnant women enrolled in prenatal care at the University of North Carolina who have a documented moderate or high level of perceived stress ( ≥ 14) and are at high risk for adverse pregnancy outcomes due to body mass index of ≥ 30 kg/m2 or history of gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, intrauterine growth restriction, or preterm birth \<37 weeks' in a prior pregnancy. Procedures: Women meeting inclusion criteria will be recruited through the University of North Carolina prenatal care clinics. They will be contacted for possible participation at regularly scheduled prenatal visits and/or ultrasound. They may also be contacted for possible participation by remote methods (e.g., Telehealth). Women who are enrolled will complete validated dietary, stress, sleep, and body image questionnaires. Enrolled women will then be randomized to receive standard obstetrical care or enhanced counseling. All participants will receive a wrist-based activity tracker. Maternal blood sample for biochemical markers of stress and gene expression will be obtained at the initial visit; a followup blood sample will be obtained later in pregnancy, and a small portion of the placenta saved at delivery. Maternal and neonatal outcomes will be compared between groups.

Tracking Breathing During Sleep With Non-contact Sensors

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of tracking breathing during sleep with non-contact sensors (for example, microphones or wireless movement sensors). The investigators will use the data collected with these sensors to develop algorithms for tracking breathing during sleep. The investigators will assess the performance of the algorithms by comparing automatic output against manually-generated labels.

Feasibility of Insomnia Tracking and Treatment in IBD

This study is a longitudinal clinical trial designed to characterize sleep patterns in individuals with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) as well as to assess the feasibility of sleep intervention (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I)) in individuals with both insomnia and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).
