A randomized study of continuing versus holding metformin during hospitalizations to internal medicine services to determine the effects on glucose control, acidosis, abdominal symptoms, length of stay, and mortality.

Participation Criteria

Sexes Eligible for Study:ALL
Accepts Healthy Volunteers:No
Standard Ages:ADULT, OLDER_ADULT
Inclusion CriteriaExclusion Criteria
  1. * Adult (18+ years of age)
  2. * Admitted to an internal medicine service.
  3. * On Metformin prior to admission.
  1. * Inability to take oral medications
  2. * eGFR \< 30 ml/min/1.73 m2
  3. * Dialysis
  4. * Current Acidosis (pH \< 7.35) including diabetic ketoacidosis
  5. * Child-Turcotte-Pugh class C hepatic cirrhosis
  6. * Acute Decompensated Heart Failure
  7. * Cognitively impaired and/or unable to consent
  8. * Lack of or unwillingness to share contact information
  9. * Pregnant women
