The purpose of this research study is to understand how breath is related to nutritional status. The procedures involved in this study include blood and breath sampling, questionnaires about health history, medications, nutritional status and diet, and a physical examination. Breath markers will be compared between individuals with and without malnutrition and be compared to indicators of malnutrition. Some individuals will undergo an interventional study involving 2 days of consuming study beverages and fasting along with providing additional breath samples to see if the breath changes in response to short-term changes in nutritional status.
The purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence of malnutrition and/or sarcopenia at admission to the hospital in older adults.
The purpose of this study is to look at safety, tolerability, and pharmacodynamic effects (i.e. how the study drug affects your body) of PF-07258669 in older participants ((60 years to \<90 years) including those at risk of malnutrition. The study medicine PF-07258669 is being developed for the treatment of unintended weight loss in older adults. People with this condition have decreased appetite and food intake, which is an important reason for poor nutrition and health results in people with unintended weight loss. This is approximately a 26-week-long study with 9 visits to the study doctor and 4 telehealth visits (ie. visits by phone call). The study will include * Screening period for up to 4 weeks * Pre-treatment period of 2 weeks * Treatment period of 16 weeks : study drug (PF-07258669 or matching placebo) * Follow-up period of 4 weeks The study requires answering questionnaires and use of digital devices at home to measure blood pressure and physical activity. The study team will monitor how each participant is doing during the study
Cirrhosis is characterized by loss of muscle as well as fat mass, which increases morbidity and mortality before, during, and after liver transplantation. A common mechanism for the reduced muscle and fat mass in cirrhosis is an increased expression of the TGF (transforming growth factor)beta superfamily member, myostatin, in the muscle and adipose tissue. The present study will examine the expression of myostatin, its receptor and intracellular signaling pathways in the skeletal muscle and mesenteric adipose tissue in cirrhotic patients undergoing liver transplantation as compared to healthy controls undergoing planned abdominal surgery. 16 cirrhotic patients will be identified from the transplant list, and 16 healthy controls from outpatient surgery lists. Nutritional assessment will be performed, including anthropometry (triceps skinfold thickness, mid arm circumference), dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), and bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). Rectus abdominis muscle tissue and omental fat tissue will be harvested in the operating room, and the expression of signaling proteins involved in skeletal muscle protein synthesis will be quantified. The investigator will also quantify the expression of genes involved in lipolysis and lipid synthesis. The investigator anticipates that the expression of myostatin will be higher in the skeletal muscle and adipose tissue of cirrhotics as compared to controls. There will be a reduction in the expression of the signaling proteins that regulate skeletal muscle protein synthesis, as well as the expression of genes regulating lipogenesis. The increased expression of myostatin will also correlate with reduced anthropometric and DEXA measurements of lean body mass and fat mass.
Evaluate the risk of developing EFAD and/or PNAC in adult and pediatric patients 1 month of age and older, who are anticipated to need 8 weeks or longer of parenteral nutrition treatment with SMOFlipid.
Growth-restricted very preterm infants (VPT) are born without adequate fat mass (FM) deposits and low docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) concentrations. They often experience further declines in DHA concentrations during the initial three weeks post-birth while advancing enteral feeds and receiving lipid supplementation predominantly through parenteral nutrition. These suboptimal enteral and parenteral nutrition practices significantly heighten the risk of faltering postnatal growth. One promising approach to mitigate these issues is enteral DHA supplementation. However, it remains unclear whether the early administration of DHA through enteral supplementation could lead to a more substantial increase in head growth without affecting FM accretion in growth-restricted VPT infants. To address this question, we propose a masked randomized clinical trial involving 152 VPT infants.
This study will demonstrate safety in pediatric patients with Parenteral Nutrition-Associated Cholestasis treated with Omegaven®, which is indicated as a source of calories and fatty acids in this patient population
Randomized controlled trial to establish evidence on which to base timing of enteral feeding after bedside PEG placement in ventilated Trauma and Surgical ICU patients.
A prospective pilot study examining nutritional supplements among vascular surgery patients with Critical Limb Ischemia (CLI). CLI patients have a high rate of malnutrition and has the potential to benefit greatly from nutritional intervention. The investigators plan to evaluate nutrition and functional status of patients by assessing objective lab values and the use of the hand grip strength test. Providing perioperative nutritional supplements to patients has potentially improved their nutritional status, which in turn may improve the patient's clinical status after surgery.
The goal of this clinical trial is to learn if Cyproheptadine, an appetite stimulant, can improve eating habits in children with Pediatric Feeding Disorders. Pediatric Feeding Disorders is a broad term that describes disorders of eating-related behaviors that causes altered consumption of food and impairs physical or psychosocial health.
