Randomized Pilot Study of Treatment for BCC Using the Multiplex 595/1064 nm Laser
Description

Laser therapy for basal cell carcinoma may be a superior option for patients who do not wish to or cannot tolerate other treatment modalities such as topical chemotherapeutics or surgery. In this pilot study, we will preliminarily assess the efficacy and safety of the 595/1064 nm Multiplex laser when treating superficial and nodular basal cell carcinomas less than 1.5 cm in size. This is an unblinded study in which patients will be randomized to either a treatment arm or a control arm. Patients in the treatment arm will receive three treatments with the 595/1064 nm multiplex laser spaced four weeks apart. The control group will visit the clinic with the same schedule as the treatment group for monitoring of the lesion. All patients will return one month after last treatment session or clinical visit, for evaluation of clinical and histological clearance.

Cure Rates of Superficial Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) EDC
Description

This is a prospective, randomized clinical trial conducted at the Unviersity of Wisconsin (UW) Dermatology Clinic located at 1 S. Park Street, Madison, WI 53715. There are no controls. Subjects meeting eligibility criteria are randomly divided into one of two treatment groups (ED\&C x 1 cycle or ED\&C x 3 cycles) using computer generated random numbers. One cycle of ED\&C is defined according to standard technique currently employed. It involves scraping away the tumor with a curette (ring- shaped instrument) and then burning the curetted site with a small electric needle (electrodessication). During Visit 1, the surgical site is marked, local numbing medication is injected, and 1 or 3 cycles of ED\&C is/are performed by board-certified dermatologists or a dermatology resident under the direct supervision of a board certified dermatologist. All follow-up visits (3, 6, 9, and 12 months after Visit 1) include skin evaluations by the physician who performed the ED\&C. The lesion site is examined, measured, and photographed for clinical evidence of recurrence, as defined by a new lesion within the previously treated site. If there is evidence of possible tumor recurrence at the treated surgical site during Visit 2, 3, 4 or 5, then the lesion will be biopsied using a shave procedure.

Blue-Light Photodynamic Therapy and Sonidegib for Multiple Basal Cell Carcinomas
Description

This research study is testing combination Blue-light photodynamic therapy and Sonidegib as a possible treatment for people with multiple basal cell carcinoma lesions. Basal cell carcinoma lesions are typically treated by freezing the lesion or surgically removing the lesion. These types of treatment can cause scarring. Photodynamic therapy uses light along with a drug applied to the skin to kill the cancer cells and cause them to break apart. The light used can cause the skin to feel warm, but does not cause scarring.

COMPLETED
Pilot Biomarker Trial to Evaluate the Efficacy of Itraconazole in Patients w/ Basal Cell Carcinomas
Description

Basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) are the most common human cancer in the US and affect over 1 million people. There is no effective drug to prevent basal cell carcinomas of the skin. We hope to learn if an oral anti-fungal drug, itraconazole, might inhibit a marker of proliferation and a biomarker (tumor signaling pathway) of BCC development. Itraconazole is an FDA-approved drug for the treatment of fungal infections of the skin, and has been used for the past 25 years with relatively few side effects. It has been shown in mice to reduce a BCC biomarker and to reduce growth of BCCs. Thus, it may reduce BCC growth in humans.

Effectiveness and Safety of X A-DERM™ Microsurfaced Acellular Dermal Matrix for Wound Healing After MOHS Surgery
Description

The goal of this single-arm clinical trial is to learn about the effectiveness and safety of the X A-DERM™ mADM in promoting wound healing and improving scar formation after MMS surgery for removing BCC, SCC, or MIS lesions on the face, head, and upper limbs. The main questions it aims to answer are how well this intervention works and what is the safety profile. The primary hypothesis is that the use of X A-DERM™ will result improved wound healing and scar formation after 60 days post-procedure. Participants will undergo MMS surgery to remove BCC, SCC, or MIS lesions, and then will receive the X A-DERM™ mADM graft at the surgical site. Participants will return to the office four additional times for the clinician to collect data on their wound healing. This will involve taking pictures of the wound, conducting clinical assessments (CROs), and documenting the patient's reported outcomes (PROs).
