Feeding Intervention for Infants With Crying
Description

The purpose of the study is to assess if infants who have excessive crying and fussing have less of these symptoms when fed a formula containing a probiotic compared to those fed a standard infant formula.

An Intervention to Decrease Infant Crying
Description

This is a study looking at the Happiest Baby on the Block technique. The investigators hypothesized that infants of mothers given a 30 minute videotape demonstrating the Happiest Baby on the Block technique would fuss/cry less and sleep longer than infants of mothers given a 30 minute videotape on general newborn care. The investigators also hypothesized that mothers given the Happiest Baby on the Block videotape would have lower levels of stress.

Measuring and Reducing Excessive Infant Crying
Description

Excessive infant crying (EIC) is likely to increase the risk of child abuse. The investigators propose a randomized trial using an intervention based on recommendations of Karp. The investigators will systematically identify 170 term infants with EIC and conduct assessments in the home at 6-8 weeks age to test the hypothesis that the intervention reduces mean infant hours of night-time crying, increases maternal soothing behaviors and improves parental anxiety and depression.

Take 5 + Audio Clip Randomized Control Trial
Description

At Yale New Haven Hospital, parents on the postpartum ward receive a Take 5 program to help train and prepare parents for strategies to manage their infant's crying. Inconsolable crying is a leading cause for abusive head trauma (AHT) in infants, and the Take 5 program has proven effective in reducing rates of AHT. However, it is also important to examine new ways of improving AHT preventative programs to optimize outcomes for infants. The purpose of this proposal is to determine whether adding a one-minute audio-clip of an infant crying, which specifically addresses AHT, to the Take 5 message given to parents of newborns on the postpartum floor of the hospital strengthens the preventive message. This is a randomized controlled trial (RCT) of parents on the postpartum ward; half will receive just Take 5, and the other half will receive the audio-clip and Take 5. Our hypotheses to be tested are that relative to parents who had Take 5 alone, those parents who hear the audio-clip before learning Take 5 will: 1. Have higher HR/BPs and higher negative affect after the training session 2. Be more likely to remember use Take 5 when they became frustrated with their infant's crying when followed up 6 weeks later. 3. Be more likely to tell other people about Take 5 and be more likely to say Take 5 was useful.

Effects of PURPLE Cry Intervention
Description

The proposed study is designed to investigate whether the PURPLE Crying program attains efficacy by optimizing the neural response in the anterior insula, and augmenting activity in regions of the brain known to be important for emotion regulation. The aim is to determine the effects of the PURPLE Cry Intervention by investigating the following: * independent variables that may affect a father's neural response to infant cries * effects of the PURPLE cry intervention, compared to a control intervention, on fathers' reported aversiveness and empathy in response to cry stimuli * effects of the PURPLE cry intervention, compared to a control intervention, on fathers' neural response to unknown infant cries compared to a tone control * effects of the PURPLE cry intervention, compared to a control intervention, on fathers' neural responses to own infant cries compared to unknown infant cries The investigators hypothesize: * prior to the PURPLE material, fathers' neural responses to infant cry stimuli will be modulated by the following variables: subjective self-reported emotional reaction to cry stimuli, hormone levels, sleep quality and quantity, sex of the infant, infant temperament, life stressors, parental expectations, personality (neuroticism), and father's own childhood experience * fathers who receive the PURPLE material compared to those that receive the control intervention will report a larger decrease in aversiveness and a larger increase in empathy in response to cry stimuli * fathers who receive the PURPLE material compared to those that receive the control intervention will show a larger decrease in activity in the anterior insula and amygdala in response to cry stimuli * fathers who receive the PURPLE material compared to those that receive the control intervention will show a larger increase in activity in regions of the brain important for emotion regulation, such as the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (PFC) and orbitofrontal PFC * fathers' neural activity in the amygdala in response to their own infant's cry stimuli will be positively correlated with both their own and infant testosterone levels

Sleep in SNOO Smart Sleeper Bassinet in Preterm Infants
Description

The goal of this clinical trial is to compare sleeping in a SNOO Smart Sleeper bassinet (SNOO) with sleeping in traditional bassinet conditions in premature infants. The main questions it aims to answer are: 1. Do preterm infants who sleep in the SNOO have more quiet sleep? 2. Do preterm infants who sleep in the SNOO have improved vital signs? * Participants will spend two separate three-hour periods sleeping in either a SNOO (which plays white noise and rocks from side-to-side) or in a SNOO that remains off (does not play white noise and does not move). There will be at least one week separating these sleep assessments. * Participants will have their sleep stage and vital signs monitored (heart rate and oxygen levels). * Participants will also wear two stickers on their forehead that measure brain oxygen levels (NIRS) and brain waves (EEG). There is a chance that the infant may experience more restful sleep and improved vital signs during the 2 sleep assessments.

This protocol is a study of the effects of Lactobacillus reuteri in 45 healthy infants with colic. The study is being conducted in order to prove treatment dose with probiotic (Lactobacillus reuteri) in a clinical setting is safe in healthy infants with colic.

Safety and Efficacy of AVP-923 for Pseudobulbar Affect in Multiple Sclerosis Patients
Description

Pseudobulbar Affect is a condition characterized by frequent episodes of laughing and crying out of proportion. Other terms used to describe this condition include emotional lability, emotionalism, emotion incontinence, emotional discontrol, excessive emotionalism and pathological laughing and crying. AVP-923 is a new experimental drug that may assist in the reduction of uncontrolled episodes. This study will test the safety and efficacy of AVP-923 in the treatment of MS patients suffering from pseudobulbar affect.

Vibrating, Cold Device for Pediatric Intravenous (IV) Cannulation Pain Relief
Description

The purpose of this study is to test the effectiveness of Buzzy®, a battery-powered reusable device that provides cold and vibration, in reducing the pain associated with intravenous (IV) cannulation. The investigators will investigate if Buzzy® is as effective as topical lidocaine cream in reducing the pain associated with IV cannulation.

Effect of Lactobacillus Rhamnosus GG (LGG) on Infant Colic
Description

This study will compare 2 currently marketed formulas in healthy full term babies: Nutramigen A+ (a hypoallergenic formula) and Nutramigen-Enflora (hypoallergenic formula with Lactobacillus GG (LGG)) during 3 months of formula feeding. The investigators' aims are to compare 3 outcomes in these babies: (1) normal baby crying time; (2) the composition of intestinal microbiota (bacteria in the stool); and (3) a lab test which measures the number of white blood cells in the large intestine (fecal calprotectin). The investigators predict that LGG supplementation (Nutramigen-Enflora) will facilitate its establishment as an important component of the neonatal intestinal microbial community and reduce fecal calprotectin.
