Lipidome and Microbiome Profile of the Eye in Rosacea
Description

The question that the investigators aim to address in this proposal is how the local lipid mediator profiles of ceramides and eicosanoids are altered in cutaneous and ocular rosacea and how antibiotics alter the lipidome. The investigators also seek to understand how the microbiome is changed in those with and without rosacea, and how the microbiome is altered in those with rosacea. Understanding how the lipidome is modulated in rosacea with antibiotic treatment will serve as the first step in targeting therapies toward directly altering the lipidome to reduce inflammation and ultimately reduce the use of antibiotics.

Oral Probiotics on the Microbiome and Lipidome in Acne Vulgaris
Description

The purpose of this study is to determine how probiotics affect sebum production and gut health in those with acne vulgaris.

The Effect of Almonds on Facial Aesthetics and Modulation of the Microbiome and Lipidome
Description

The investigator hypothesizes that regular consumption of almonds will 1) improve the facial wrinkle severity in post-menopausal women, 2) improve the evenness of facial skin pigmentation, 3) diversify the gut microbiome and increase the short chain fatty acids in the blood, and 4) improve the skin barrier biophysical properties.

The Influence of Oral Probiotics on the Microbiome and Lipidome
Description

The purpose of this study is to measure oil production of the face, facial properties, and gut bacteria in people being given oral probiotics. Probiotic supplements contain active cultures of bacteria that are thought to be beneficial to human health. The investigators want to find out if probiotics taken by mouth alter the bacteria in subject's gut and subject's skin oil production compared to a placebo. This is a single blind study and subject may receive a probiotic or a placebo for the first half of the study and a placebo or a probiotic for the second half of the study. Subject will not know what was given to participants.

Lipidome and Microbiome Profile of Acne
Description

Lipidome and microbiome analysis in subjects with acne on doxycycline. Investigators will look at the skin lipidome, blood lipidome, gut micro biome and skin micro biome. Investigators will look at the changes between acne subjects and control participants, but also the changes that occur after the use of antibiotics and how this is altered.

Cosmetic Effects of Topical Acetyl Zingerone
Description

Cosmeceuticals are an emerging market within dermatology and the growth of natural products and derivatives of natural products has accelerated in use within the field. Here the investigators aimed to study the microbial and cosmetic effects of Synoxyl AZ, the trade name for topical acetyl zingerone (AZ), a novel compound designed based on Zingerone and curcumin.

A Cohort Study of the Intestinal Microbiota of Premature Infants
Description

Premature infants are at risk for a variety of diseases, the investigators would like to learn more about why some premature babies are at higher risk and some are protected from these diseases. Scientists at UC Davis and other universities have developed new ways to measure the bacteria and a large number of small molecules in specimens of infant blood, urine, stomach fluid and poop and in mother's milk. These discoveries allow us to consider questions that were impossible to answer before these new techniques were developed. One such question is whether the bacteria in the poop of a premature baby can help us predict the baby's risk for developing infection or a common and serious disease of premature infants called necrotizing enterocolitis. A second question is whether the DNA of a premature baby (obtained from saliva with a q-tip) can predict higher risk for diseases of premature babies.
