The goal of this clinical trial is to examine the impact of a specific guided meditation (Twin Hearts Meditation; THM) on cognitive functioning and EEG dynamics in experienced and inexperienced meditators. The main questions it aims to answer are: * Will the experienced meditators outperform inexperienced meditators on the attention control tasks (Flanker, Trails A \& B) at baseline (pre-meditation)? * Will both groups show improvements in performance after meditation associated with mood and physiological state changes? * Will the experienced meditators show an overall mood profile of higher positive mood states and less negative mood states (Brunel Mood Scale subscale difference) at baseline (pre-meditation)? * Will both groups show mood state improvements after meditation? * Will the experienced meditators show differences in electrophysiological characteristics compared to inexperienced meditators? * Will inexperienced meditators exhibit shifts from their baseline resting-state EEG towards being more similar to the EEG characteristics of experienced meditators at baseline? * Will experienced meditators demonstrate differences in P300 latencies and amplitudes on the auditory oddball paradigm. Testing the Effectiveness and Implementation of a Meditation App for Youth in the Legal System
Description

The goals of this hybrid type 2 randomized controlled trial (RCT) are to evaluate the effectiveness and individual-level implementation of a 1-month app-based meditation program with youth on probation in Cook County, IL. The primary questions it is designed to answer are: 1. Is the meditation app associated with improvements in behavioral health outcomes including cannabis use problems? 2. Do improvements in emotion regulation appear to mediate the effects of the meditation app on these behavioral health outcomes? 3. Will youth adequately adhere to the meditation app?

Assessing the Impact of VR-Based Observational Mindfulness Meditation on Stress Reduction in Adults

This study investigates the impact of a mindfulness-based intervention using virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI) coaching on stress reduction. Participants will engage in VR-based observation mindfulness activities guided by an AI coach. The study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of this intervention compared to a standard relaxation process by measuring self-reported stress levels, physiological biomarkers (e.g., heart rate), and participant satisfaction. The research could inform the development of future digital mental health interventions.

This research will explore the effect of the Transcendental Meditation® Technique on migraine intensity and frequency. It will be a single-arm pilot study involving 30 participants recruited from migraine treatment facilities and support groups in the US.

Optimizing Microdosing and Meditation
Description

The goal of this clinical trial is to test the feasibility of combining meditation with psilocybin microdosing in healthy adults. The main questions it aims to answer are: 1. Recruitment and retention feasibility 2. Acceptability, Safety and Tolerability 3. Exploratory Measures: 3.1: Explore potential changes in sleep quality and duration, heart rate variability, and other biometric outcomes captured by the Oura Ring (3rd generation). 3.2: Explore potential changes in quality of life scores 3.3: Explore potential differences in altered states of consciousness across groups 3.4: Explore qualitative data collected during sessions and at follow-up to assess satisfaction and receive feedback about the intervention. Every participant will receive the psilocybin microdosing intervention, however, half of the participants will be randomly selected to receive the meditation intervention.

Multicenter Trial of Meditation and Health Education for Cardiometabolic Disease in Black Women
Description

This randomized controlled trial compared the efficacy of stress reduction with meditation to a health education (HE) group in 201 older African American women over a one-year study period. They were randomly allocated to either of two behavioral treatment groups-the Transcendental Meditation (TM) program or a health education (HE) program. Participants were recruited, tested, and instructed at two clinical sites: Howard University Hospital, Washington, DC and Morehouse (School of Medicine) Healthcare, Atlanta, GA. Main outcome measures were carotid intima-media thickness, insulin resistance, and behavioral factors.

The goal of this research is to test whether certain areas of focus in breath meditation are connected with certain mental health outcomes. The main question to be addressed is whether attention placed on the breath in the belly versus the nostrils during meditation results in differences in subjective experience, respiration and heart rate. The Effect of SKY Breath Meditation on Health and Well-being

The goal of this pilot SKY (Sudarshan Kriya Yoga) Breath Meditation study is to establish feasibility and acceptability of the intervention; and investigate preliminary effectiveness of the intervention at the DNA methylation, RNA and protein levels in blood samples collected from participants before and after the 8 week SKY intervention. Primary outcomes also include preliminary effectiveness at the physiological level using a wearable device used for continuous monitoring. Secondary outcome measures include behavioral inventories.

Virtual Reality and Meditation for Fibromyalgia
Description

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a particularly debilitating rheumatological syndrome which affects millions of adults in the United States. The condition presents with widespread chronic muscular pain and reduced pain thresholds, fatigue, insomnia, and negative affect. Chronic pain that is caused by FM can have significant effects on physical function, psychological parameters, and overall quality of life. Currently, there is a need for safe and effective non-pharmacologic pain-management strategies for FM, and research has shown that virtual reality (VR) may be a useful tool for some of these clients. The literature has suggested improvements in pain scores on a visual analog scale (VAS) for adults with a variety of rheumatological issues, including FM. Additional research has demonstrated that affect was improved for clients with FM who participated in a 10-minute VR mindfulness session. Such findings highlight the potential benefits of VR and mindfulness meditation for clients with FM. However, there is a great deal that remains unknown about the effectiveness of these pain management techniques. Therefore, this pilot study will examine and compare the effectiveness of combining VR and meditation for improving symptoms of FM in adults. We hypothesize that a VR meditation session will facilitate greater improvements in pain, affect, and physiological vital stats as compared to a non-immersive meditation intervention.

Improving the Mental Health and Well Being of Healthcare Providers Through the Transcendental Meditation Technique
Description

The level of stress-related disorders experienced by Healthcare Providers (HCPs) has increased due to the recent COVID-19 Pandemic, impacting patient care and provider shortages. This trial aims to evaluate the use of the Transcendental Meditation Technique in improving burnout and wellbeing of HCPs over a 3-month trial period. A total of 130 HCPs will be recruited from participating Miami hospitals, with 65 HCPs receiving training in the use of the Transcendental Meditation Technique. The remaining participants will be part of a matched control group and will not receive any training. Study outcomes will be assessed at baseline, 2 weeks, 1 month, and 3 months.

Incentivizing Meditation App Habit Formation
Description

Over 75% of U.S. adults report significant stress, resulting in major health and economic costs. Mobile meditation apps are a feasible, effective, and scalable strategy for self-managing stress that is rapidly growing in popularity and thus represent a key tool for improving public health. However, existing intervention strategies for establishing persistent mobile health app adherence have largely been unsuccessful. Thus, there is a need for alternative strategies to move those who initiate meditation, i.e. new paying subscribers to a mobile meditation app. The investigators propose to synthesize theory- and evidence-based intervention approaches from psychology and behavioral economics to test novel combined strategies for establishing persistent adherence to meditation using the scalable Calm app. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the use of anchoring strategies in combination with pragmatic in-kind rewards to identify the most optimal strategy for establishing persistent meditation habits with a mobile app. The investigators aim to assess the adherence persistence to a 10 minutes per day Calm prescription in new, paying self-initiated Calm subscribers; investigate the mediating effect of anchoring plan adherence on adherence persistence to the Calm prescription; and estimate the dynamic relationship between meditation adherence and stress. The investigators hypothesize that participants using anchoring strategies in combination with pragmatic in-kind rewards will be more likely to adhere to the Calm prescription than the control condition with greater adherence observed among those participating in the anchoring plus time-contingent reward intervention; greater adherence to anchoring plans will lead to higher adherence persistence; and greater reductions in stress will be associated with more persistent meditation adherence across study groups. Investigators aim to recruit N=555 new, paying self-initiated Calm subscribers. Participants will be randomized into one of three groups with 185 participants in each group: anchoring plus in-kind rewards conditional on anchoring plan adherence; anchoring plus in-kind rewards conditional on meditating at any time of day; and usual Calm control condition without in-kind rewards.

Effect of a Daily Meditation Intervention in Student Pharmacists
Description

Pharmacy school is a 3-to-4 year intensive program that demands a high level of performance from enrolled students. The fast-paced and challenging curriculum causes stress levels to rise in students. The increase in stress can negatively affect performance in the classroom, as well as affect relationships outside the classroom setting. While some level of stress may be beneficial, the substantial amount of stress experienced by pharmacy students may also negatively impact their quality of life. This proposed study aims to explore the effect a convenient intervention on perceived stress, mindfulness, well-being, and resilience as reported by student pharmacists. Headspace will be used as the main study intervention. This product is a mobile device application (aka, an app) that teaches users how to meditate through guided exercises. It contains a library of different meditation exercises the user can access from their smartphone or tablet at their own convenience. It is our hope that the use of Headspace will enhance the students' ability to practice mindfulness, which will allow them to better cope with stress in school and in future practice. This could translate into improved learning and overall well-being.

App-Based Mindfulness Meditation for People of Color Who Experience Race-Related Stress
Description

In the United States, people of color (POC) are disproportionally affected by stressors related to race/ethnicity compared with their non-Latinx White (NLW). Considering POC exposed to race-related stress are at high risk of developing a mental health disorder, there is a clear need for treatments that allow individuals to cope effectively with these stressors. Among many evidence-based treatments available, mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) may be particularly well suited to help POC cope. MBIs are hypothesized to be effective via increases in mindfulness and self-compassion, as well as reductions in experiential avoidance, rumination, and emotion suppression. Despite their effectiveness, MBIs rarely reach POC. As such, innovative strategies such as self-directed app-based intervention may reduce the treatment gap. Considering the lack of research examining the effectiveness of MBIs among POC, especially those who experience elevated levels of race-related stress, this study will employ a randomized control trial (RCT) approach to examine whether receiving an app-based MBI engages the hypothesized mechanisms of change (i.e., mindfulness, self-compassion, experiential avoidance, rumination, emotion suppression) among POC. Similarly, the study will test whether the intervention leads to decreases in the negative mental health outcomes more often associated with exposure to race-related stress (i.e., stress, anxiety, depression). Acceptability, adherence, and satisfaction also will be analyzed to explore whether a non-culturally adapted MBI is still relevant for POC who face race-related stress. Results from this trial will contribute to the nascent data on MBI acceptability and effectiveness with POC. To the investigators' knowledge, this study will also be the first to include a sample of POC recruited based on elevated levels of race-related stress, a high-risk population that is not commonly targeted in MBI research.

Multisite Feasibility of Compassion Meditation for Veterans With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Compassion meditation (CM) is a contemplative practice that builds compassion for and connectedness with others. CM has shown promise as a way of enhancing recovery for Veterans with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The proposed project will examine the feasibility of a clinical trial by assessing our ability to deliver CM and a control intervention consistently with a diverse groups of Veterans from different parts of the country and optimizing the way in which outcomes are determined.

Heartfulness Meditation to Improve Resilience Among Health Care Students: A 90 Day Program

This investigation will examine the feasibility of delivery and effect on resilience, depression and anxiety of a 90-day Heartfulness Practice delivered virtually for health care students. Effect of Heartfulness Meditation on Brain Waves and How Calm One Feels During Meditation

Objectives: 1. To assess the EEG patterns and EKG recordings of participants with no meditation experience with simply closing the eyes for 10 minutes followed by relaxing for 30 minutes. 2. To assess the EEG patterns and EKG recordings of participants with no meditation experience by simply closing the eyes for 10 minutes and then with guided Heartfulness relaxation and meditation for 30 minutes. 3. To assess the baseline anxiety score through GAD-7 questionnaire, subjective experience of all the participants through MEDEQ questionnaire that measures the depth of the meditation experience after the session and correlate with the EEG patterns of the brain and heart rate changes. EEG and EKG data from the groups will be analyzed by the sleep specialist. EKG device data for HRV and the EEG data will be correlated with the subjective depth of meditation experience in both the groups

Compassion Meditation vs. Health Education for Veterans
Description

Chronic pain (CP) is a major health problem for military Veterans, and CP is often associated with comorbid mental health problems, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. CP with psychological comorbidity is associated with increased healthcare costs, medication use, risk of suicide and rates of disability and reduced quality of life. Current empirically supported treatments do not always lead to substantial improvements (up to 50% of patients drop out or are do not respond to treatment). This project was designed to evaluate the efficacy of a novel intervention for addressing these challenges. Compassion meditation (CM), a meditative practice that focuses on the wish to remove suffering, is a contemplative practice that has promise for the amelioration of physical and mental health problems as well as promoting positive affect and improving quality of life. This study will evaluate the efficacy of Cognitively-Based Compassion Training for Chronic Pain with Psychological Comorbidity (CBCT-CP+) compared to Health Education while Living with Pain (H.E.L.P.) control condition, in a sample of among Veterans with CP conditions and psychological comorbidity.

This study investigates how different types of meditation may affect behaviors and emotions. The study is conducted entirely online and involves listening to 4-weeks of a guided meditation training. The meditation involves either Loving-Kindness or Relaxation techniques. The purpose of the study is to assess changes in behaviors and emotions using standard questionnaires, reports of real-world behavior, and online behavioral tasks. The Impact of 8 Weeks of Digital Meditation Application and Healthy Eating Program on Work Stress and Health Outcomes
Description

The aim of the present study is to test the effects of a digital meditation intervention and/or a healthy eating intervention in a sample of UCSF employees with overweight and obesity (BMI\>=25kg/m2) who report mild to moderate stress. We will randomize UCSF employees to 8-weeks of a digital meditation intervention (using the commercially available application, Headspace), a healthy eating intervention, a digital meditation+healthy eating intervention, or a waitlist control condition.
