Understanding Sports Nutrition Knowledge of High School Athletes and Influencers
Description

The objective of this testing is to gain a better understanding of sports nutrition knowledge in high school athletes and their influencers (coaches, strength and conditioning coaches, athletic therapists, dieticians). Since the sports nutrition knowledge of the high school athletes will be limited, nutrition behaviors will be assessed to infer knowledge of sports nutrition. The secondary objective is to determine the primary sources of nutrition knowledge in these populations.

Nutrition Knowledge for Spanish-speaking Parents
Description

Providing child nutrition information is a major goal of every pediatric well-child visit. Unfortunately, due to a wide array of issues, doing this effectively during clinic visits is challenging and insufficient. It is because of this that some have looked for innovative ways to enhance the delivery of this information. One such way is the use of touch screen computer programs containing nutritional information. Several studies have documented the value of patients receiving health information in such a manner. Nonetheless, the use of this medium has not been well studied in Spanish-speaking care providers of young children. The investigators recently conducted a study that evaluated user's perception of the usability of such technology, finding that most users thought that the touchscreen was easy to use, despite their low computer confidence levels. The investigators also evaluated the impact of using nutrition modules on user's nutrition knowledge, finding that immediately after use; participant's nutrition knowledge was improved. I now propose to evaluate this technology further through a 4 armed randomized controlled trial. The goal here is to evaluate the longer term impact of the educational modules on nutrition knowledge and the impact, if any, of additional web access to the modules, on longer term knowledge. A secondary goal is to better understand nutritional habits in this population and perceptions of weight.

Comparing Front-of-package Nutrient Labels
Description

The goal of this study is to compare front-of-package labels to a no-label control and to one another: 1.) FDA's Nutrition Info with %DV, 2.) Nutrition Info with red "high", 3.) FDA's High In, 4.) multiple High In labels-one for each nutrient and 5.) a no-label control. Primary outcomes include 1.) correct identification of foods and beverages with the healthiest and least healthy overall nutrient profiles, 2.) perceived healthfulness of products low in two nutrients of concern, and 3.) correct identification of foods and beverages as high in saturated fat, sodium, and added sugars.

Assessing the Impact of Front-of-package Nutrient Labels
Description

This study aims to compare different front-of-package label designs, using two schemes: (1) High In and (2) Nutrition Info with each scheme having (1) a version with colors (i.e., green, yellow, and/or red) indicating level of nutrient content and (2) a black-and-white version. Additionally the Nutrition Info scheme will have a version that includes the percent Daily Value in black and white. Labels will be compared against a no-label control and one another.

Effect of Added-sugar Menu Labels
Description

To compare two added-sugar menu label--(1) red, icon-only, 150% of the menu text height and (2) black, icon-plus-text, 100% of the menu text height--to a no-label control on grams of added sugar ordered using two different added-sugar labeling thresholds: (1) ≥50% of Daily Value for added sugar (equivalent to ≥25g) and (2) ≥100% of Daily Value for added sugar (equivalent to ≥50g)

Developing Novel Methods to Teach Children to Recognize Internal Signals of Hunger
Description

The purpose of this multi-year project is to develop an evidence-based curriculum for teaching preschool children to eat in response to internal hunger and fullness signals. There are currently no validated methods for teaching children these basic skills, despite the fact that doing so is necessary to prevent the development of obesity.

Assessing Novel Methods of Improving Patient Education of Nutrition
Description

The relationship between elevated phosphorus levels and morbidity and mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is well recognized, and dietary phosphorus restriction is a mainstay of phosphate management. Current study is an effort to test the effect of a web-based nutritional educational intervention, Kidney School(KS), to improve phosphorous knowledge and control phosphorous intake in CKD patients.

Knowledge of Nutritional Concerns in Physically Active Females
Description

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine whether implementation of an educational tool for nutritional concerns in 18-25-year-old females who participate in sport increases their understanding of various nutritional concerns. By studying an educational tool geared towards nutritional concerns of the female athlete, clinicians can use the information to improve clinical practice and patient outcomes. Procedure: Participants will be asked to complete a previously validated survey assessing knowledge of nutritional concerns of female athletes: the Female Athlete Triad, Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport, and eating disorders. The survey will be completed immediately pre- and post-receipt of the educational intervention. The intervention includes education on the previously mentioned nutritional concerns.

Breakfast Knowledge, Beliefs, and Habits of Exercising Adults
Description

This study is being done to determine typical breakfast consumption habits in various populations of exercisers. Participants will be asked a series of questions pertaining to their participation in regular exercise, their current breakfast consumption, food preferences, meal timing, and general knowledge of sports nutrition and pre-exercise breakfast consumption.

Measuring Nutrition Literacy in Clinical Practice: Evaluating Effects Upon Providers and Patients
Description

This study evaluates the effects of assessing patient nutrition literacy prior to an initial session with an outpatient dietitian on the patient-centeredness of the session. We will randomize 6 dietitians, 4 of whom will have access to their participating patients' nutrition literacy scores. These dietitians will use this information to better inform their interventions, and hopefully improve their patients' nutrition literacy as a result.

Description

The purpose of this research study is to evaluate the knowledge of parents and children with respect to dementia symptoms, risk factors, and response before and after an interactive dementia education program that uses music and dance to enhance a health education curriculum at 1-week and 3-months after the intervention.

Translational Health After School Program on Health-Related Knowledge/Behaviors and Exercise Perception
Description

The aim of this study is to examine the effects of a translational health in nutrition and kinesiology (THINK) after school program on physical variables, nutrition and exercise knowledge base/behaviors, and exercise enjoyment and confidence. Partnering with the YMCA investigators in the Kinesiology and Sport Sciences department at the University of Miami will set up the after-school THINK program offered three afternoons per week for nine months in two experimental and two control schools. The schools will consist of minority elementary school students (predominantly Hispanic and Black) in the South Florida area. The control schools will receive baseline, mid-year and follow-up testing nine months later, but will not go through the THINK program. They will instead go through their standard YMCA after school Sports, Play, and Active Recreation for Kids (SPARK) program.

Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practice of Surgeons Toward Nutrition Support in HIPEC Patients
Description

The goal of this survey of international HIPEC (Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy) surgeons is to determine their knowledge of and attitudes towards the nutritional support needs of HIPEC patients and what their practice patterns are with this patient population.

Addressing Disparities in Food Access Among Young Children in Louisiana: A Farm to ECE Approach
Description

The goal of this pilot project is to increase access to healthy food, improve diets, and reduce food insecurity and, in turn, reduce health disparities among low-income, minority children under the age of five attending early childcare centers. Specific aims are to: 1) examine the feasibility of a six-month Farm to ECE intervention and 2) collect preliminary data to evaluate the efficacy of the program to 2.1) improve the ECE nutrition environment from baseline to follow-up; 2.2) increase access to local fruits and vegetables among children at ECEs from baseline to follow-up; and 2.3) increase parent knowledge and use of community food resources. The investigators will use this preliminary data to develop a larger scale project to test intervention efficacy.

The KP Personal Shopper: A Pilot to Improve the Impact of Dietary Advice
Description

Randomized trial of grocery-store based nutrition counseling visits for weight management vs. in-office visits. The investigators will test pre- and post-intervention individual-level dietary quality, knowledge, self-efficacy around dietary choice, and cost of shopping, measuring difference between intervention and control arms. At the study's end, the investigators will also conduct focus groups with a subset of 20 patients (10 from each arm) and do a structured interview with the dietitian to better understand the feasibility, strengths and shortcomings of this approach. Patients who complete the main portion of the trial will be randomly selected for recruitment into a focus group and consented separately for that focus group at the end of the study. The investigators hypothesize that, compared to office-based visits, the KP Personal Shopper visits will result in higher member diet quality scores, better nutritional knowledge scores, higher self-efficacy and confidence around food purchasing decisions, and more favorable perception of the visit by both dietician and member. The KP Personal Shopper approach may also result in increased grocery store costs for some members. Long-term, the investigators hypothesize that improvements in member perception, knowledge and dietary quality will lead to improved health outcomes.
