Consumer Perceptions of Cannabidiol (CBD) Health Claims
Description

Over 46 million US adults report use of cannabidiol (CBD), primarily to treat medical ailments. The growing CBD market spans the range of products that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates including drugs, dietary supplements, food/beverages and cosmetics. CBD cannot be marketed as having therapeutic benefits (without FDA's approval), be false or misleading to consumers, or convey the products are approved or endorsed by the FDA. In addition, CBD cannot be marketed as a food additive or dietary supplement since it is an active ingredient in an approved drug, Epidiolex. Despite this, CBD products have been illicitly advertised to consumers with these claims including unsubstantiated health claims that promote benefits including curing cancer and preventing Alzheimer's disease. These types of claims may reduce perceptions of harm and increase perceived benefits of use. This study aims to evaluate how consumers perceive real-world CBD advertisements. To that end, we will implement an online survey and randomize adult participants (ages 18-65) to see various advertisements made about CBD to determine if they interpret advertisements as making health claims that are currently prohibited by the FDA.

Perception in Parkinson's Disease
Description

The investigators plan to examine the relation of perceptual variables-basic vision, unusual perceptual experiences(including but not limited to visual hallucinations)-to relevant functional variables such as cognition, mood, and alertness/sleepiness in an online sample of persons with Parkinson's disease (PwPD). It is hypothesized that unusual perceptual experiences will relate significantly to the selected variables. Participants do not need to experience visual hallucinations to be able to participate in this study. This is an observational study only, and not an interventional study.

Studying the Effects of Natural Visual Scene Changes on Typical Adult Visual Perception
Description

The natural visual environment is complex and rich with different stimuli and features. The visual system must constantly extract behaviorally relevant visual information from an abundance of irrelevant information in the visual scene. To complicate matters further, the visual feature or stimulus that is most relevant at any given moment can change quickly and frequently in realistic visual environments. The mechanisms by which task-relevant information guides perceptual behavior are not fully understood. In this study, psychophysical experiments will be used to measure participants' ability to discriminate the horizontal position of a central object within a complex, natural visual scene, as well as to measure how that ability is affected by within-trial variability in the features of background objects in the scene. The goal of this study is to investigate the overarching prediction that the visual system extracts task-relevant information in a manner that reflects realistically complex visual environments in which the stimuli change quickly and frequently. Specifically, this study will test the hypothesis that task-irrelevant variability in the scene affects participants' ability to discriminate the visual feature that is relevant to the task at hand.

Description

Effective communication is a critical component of managing pandemic outbreaks like COVID-19. This study explores COVID-19 related public knowledge, perceptions, belief in public health recommendations, intent to comply with public health recommendations, trust in information sources and preferred information sources. Participants are invited to include detailed free-text answers to make sure their COVID-19 experiences are heard.

Beta Events and Sensory Perception
Description

Low-frequency brain rhythms in the alpha (8-14Hz) and beta (15-29Hz) bands are strong predictors of perception and functional performance in a range of tasks, and are disrupted in several disease states. The purpose of this study is to investigate a direct causal relationship between low-frequency brain rhythms and sensory perception, and to optimize commonly used TMS paradigms to impact sensory processing and perception in a similar manner as endogenous rhythms. To do so, this study combines human magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), electroencephalography (EEG), non-invasive brain stimulation (transcranial magnetic stimulation; TMS), and biophysically principled computational neural modeling.

Perception, Cognition, and Gait in Parkinson's Disease
Description

The investigators are examining how aspects of daily function are perceived in persons with PD and in those who interact with them on a regular basis. If eligible, participants will receive a set of online questionnaires by email. The questionnaires will take about 1 hour to complete, and can be done at the participant's convenience. The investigators are looking for volunteers who have a diagnosis of Parkinson's disease without dementia (age 40 or older and proficient English speakers). If a spouse, family member, significant other or other close associate is available (age 18 or older, proficient English speakers), the investigators will send them questionnaires as well. The purpose of this study is to explore emerging physical therapy practice in palliative care, and the perceptions of physical therapists regarding their care of the functionally dependent elderly, including: (1) the role and utilization of palliative care intervention in current practice, (2) current and potential goal-setting practices which may relate to palliative care, and (3) therapists' awareness of cultural and psychosocial issues in patient care.

Background: * Understanding participants experiences as research volunteers is critical to improving the effectiveness of human participant protection programs and strengthening public trust in clinical research. Historically, studies that evaluate participants comprehension of the informed consent document or evaluate the informed consent process have only indirectly measured the quality of a participant s experience. * Few studies have assessed the nature, quality and efficiency of the entire clinical research process from the participant s perspective. To address this need, researchers have developed a Clinical Research Participant Perception Survey to evaluate participants overall perceptions of clinical research. Objectives: - To validate the Research Participant Perception Survey questionnaire and revise it accordingly to produce a questionnaire that other researchers can use. Eligibility: - Individuals at least 18 years of age who have participated in at least one research protocol within the past 2 years. Participation may be completed or ongoing. Research Participants Perceptions of Their Experience in Clinical Studies
Description

This study will examine how research volunteers experience their participation in studies in order to develop surveys to be used by research centers trying to improve the experience of their participants. People 18 years of age and older who have participated in an NIH research protocol within the past 2 years as someone with a medical condition under study may be eligible for this study. Eight participants will participate in a moderator facilitated focus group in a discussion about being in research studies. An observer audiotapes the discussion and takes written notes. The focus group discussion lasts about 1 to 1 (Omega) hours.

Rhythm Perception and Generation
Description

This study will examine how different brain areas are involved in the perception of rhythmic patterns and the performance of rhythmic movements. Patients with certain types of brain diseases, such as Parkinson's disease and some types of stroke, may have difficulty performing rhythmic movements, such as finger tapping. Healthy, right-handed volunteers between 21 and 65 years of age may be eligible for this study. Candidates with visual, motor or hearing problems are excluded, as are musicians and pregnant women. Participants will come to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center for up to six sessions of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanning. MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to obtain images of body organs and tissues. The scanner is a metal cylinder surrounded by a magnetic field. During the MRI, the subject lies still for up to 20 minutes at a time on a table in the cylinder and wears earplugs to muffle loud knocking noises that occur with the electrical switching of the magnetic fields. He or she can communicate with the MRI staff through a microphone at all times during the procedure. For fMRI, images are obtained while the subject performs a task, such as hearing sounds or moving a finger. The machine detects changes in brain movement that are involved in performing the task. The tasks are explained, and subjects can practice them before entering the scanner.

Alzheimer's Disease Treatment and Illness Perceptions Survey (TIPS) II
Description

The TIPS Study, or Treatment and Illness Perceptions Survey, is a study funded by the national Alzheimer's Association to learn more about differences between African Americans' and Whites' attitudes, beliefs, and experiences related to Alzheimer's disease (AD). The study involves a one-time 30-minute telephone survey in which participants are asked about a range of topics related to AD, including their personal experiences, their beliefs about the disease's symptoms and risk factors, and their attitude toward possible future treatment options. Information from the survey will be used to develop more culturally sensitive health education and healthcare services for persons with AD.

Online Rotating Delivery of Perception/Production Enhanced Treatment for Rhotics
Description

The goal of this clinical trial is to determine whether perceptual training enhances speech perception and production outcomes in children with Residual Speech Sound Disorders (RSSD). The main questions it aims to answer are: Does pre-treatment speech production accuracy predict treatment response? Does perceptual acuity influence the effectiveness of perception-first versus production-first interventions? Researchers will compare TAU+Perception-first and TAU-first treatment conditions to see if the order of intervention affects speech improvement outcomes, particularly based on participants' initial perception and production accuracy. Participants will: Complete pre-treatment evaluations to assess /r/ production and speech perception. Be grouped into high or low production and perception accuracy categories based on established thresholds. Be randomly assigned (using a blocked randomization procedure) to one of two treatment arms via telepractice. Participate in the assigned treatment condition designed to target speech sound accuracy. Randomization is stratified to ensure treatment groups are balanced based on pre-treatment severity in both the perception and production domains.

Patient Perceptions and Experiences Following Multiple Sessions of Simulated or Genuine HVLA Manual Chiropractic Adjustments
Description

Our primary aim with this trial is to measure participant blinding following two simulated/sham or genuine/real high velocity, low amplitude (HVLA) manual chiropractic adjustments to assess if participants are able to identify their un-disclosed treatment group. Our secondary aims with this trial are to utilize electrocardiography (ECG), impedance cardiography (ICG), and gait analysis before either treatment session and after both treatment sessions to assess if there are any changes with the participants' measurements before and after a sham or genuine HVLA chiropractic treatment.

Pain Perception During Intra-Articular Knee Joint Injection: What is the Effect of Needle Gauge and the Use of Ethyl Chloride?
Description

This study aims to investigate factors that affect the subjective experience of pain during and after intra-articular knee joint injection of steroids by comparing needle gauge size (22 G vs 25 G needles), as well as the presence or absence of topical ethyl chloride spray. Additionally, this study will investigate the effects of other various factors on patients' pain associated with the injection. Lastly, this study aims to determine the effect of patients' subjective pain from the injection on long-term clinical outcomes. Specific aims are as follows: Aim 1): Determine the effect of needle gauge size on patient reported pain associated with an ultrasound-guided intra-articular knee injection. Aim 2): Determine the effect of ethyl chloride spray on patient reported pain associated with an ultrasound-guided intra-articular knee injection. Aim 3): Determine the effect of sex, age, BMI, thigh size, severity of OA, and fear of needles on patient pain associated with an ultrasound-guided intra-articular knee injection. Aim 4) Determine the effect of patient pain from the procedure on longer term clinical outcomes after an ultrasound-guided intra-articular knee steroid injection. Researchers will obtain data at various time points, including pre-procedural data, immediately after the procedure, 24-48 hours after, and 6 weeks post-procedure. Participants will: Consent to receiving an intra-articular knee joint injection with steroids if indicated. Score their "procedural" pain immediately following the procedure, score their post-procedural "soreness" 24-48 hours after via telephone call, and score their overall knee pain about 6 weeks after the procedure via telephone call.

The Influence of Movement Velocity Biofeedback on Muscle Activation and Self Perception in Older Adults with Sarcopenia
Description

The overall objective for this clinical trial is to provide evidence for internal and external cueing for physical therapists and other rehabilitation clinicians to optimize resistance training within rehabilitation for older adults. The main questions it aims to answer are: * What is the impact of external focus (providing velocity of movement for each repetition) compared to internal focus (i.e., no cues, control group) on physical percent velocity loss and neuromuscular activation in older adults with sarcopenia? * Does internal and external focus influence motivation and perceptual workload following resistance training in older adults with sarcopenia? Researchers will compare external focus to internal focus to see if external focus impacts percent velocity loss, motivation, and perceived workload. Participants will: * Visit the lab once per week for 3 weeks * Perform exercise testing using a leg press * Answer questionnaires regarding perceived workload and motivation before and after exercise

Veteran's Perceptions of Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy for Depression and End-of-Life
Description

The goal of this exploratory, mixed-method design study is to gather qualitative and quantitative data obtained through interviews and questionnaires with veterans who are currently enrolled at the VA for healthcare. The main question this study aims to answer is: How do veterans aged 65+ who are enrolled for care at the VA understand ketamine assisted psychotherapy for depression and for end-of-life distress? Using a story-completion approach, participants will be provided with a brief story starter involving a fictitious character and scenario and asking them to complete the story. Few contextual details will be offered about the character. In responding to ambiguous cues, participants are thought to project their conscious and subconscious perceptions about the phenomenon in question onto the story, a useful method for exploring stigmatized topics. The purpose of this exercise is to ascertain the participants attitudes and perceptions regarding ketamine assisted psychotherapy.

One of the most widespread symptoms of COVID-19 is loss of the sense of smell. There are very few treatments for helping individuals recover their sense of smell. Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) may be a useful tool in helping people recover their smell perception. In this study the investigators test whether OMT can be used to help individuals recover their sense of smell if they lost it during COVID-19.

This study aims to assess patient-reported experiences post-vaccination with RIV3 using the VAPI instrument, identify drivers for vaccine choice in each case, and assess the cross-validity of VAPI, by establishing magnitude of correlations to EQ-5D-5L domains. As a feasibility endpoint, this study aims to describe the socio-demographic differences and feasibility of matching between recipients of RIV3 vaccine and mRNA vaccines for COVID-19.

Assessing the Impact of Perceptions of Unpredictability on Objective Measures of Food Consumption and Metabolism
Description

Background: Many people in the United States are overweight or obese. This natural history study will look into how life events during childhood can impact eating behaviors and weight gain as adults. Objective: To explore how childhood experiences affect adult eating behaviors. Eligibility: Healthy people aged 18 to 60 years. Design: Participants will have 3 clinic visits. They will be screened with blood tests. They will answer questions about their alcohol and tobacco use. At the next visit, participants will undergo these activities: Parts of their body (such as waist, neck, and thighs) will be measured with a tape. They will have an imaging scan to find out how much body fat they have. They will start wearing a device like a wristwatch that measures their physical activity. They will wear this device for up to 10 days. They will wear a device on their upper arm or belly that measures blood glucose (sugar) levels. Participants will wear this for 7-10 days. They will answer questions about their education, childhood, and routines. They will receive a kit to collect a stool sample at home. At the last visit, participants will have these tests: Participants will relax and breathe normally while wearing a clear, plastic canopy that fits over their entire head. Blood samples will be taken before and after participants drink a sugary drink. Participants will be offered a large selection of foods for lunch. They will eat as much as they want. Then they will answer questions about how they feel about food and themselves.

This multi-method project will recruit young adults who currently use cigarillos and examine the effects of different flavored cigarillo types (concept, characterizing, tobacco) on three measures of tobacco product appeal: subjective effects (e.g., taste, enjoyment, satisfaction, reward), actual smoking behavior (e.g., number of puffs), and tobacco product purchases via a simulated experimental tobacco marketplace.
