It is well established that post-exercise rehydration with electrolyte solutions is more effective than plain water. However, most commercially available drinks are high in electrolytes but lack some essential trace minerals. This study aims to examine the impact of a higher-electrolyte sports drink compared with a low-electrolyte, trace-mineral-rich solution and water on the time course and extent of rehydration after exercise-induced dehydration.
Dehydration lowers both physical and mental performance if it is severe enough. Performance declines are more pronounced in hot conditions or after prolonged strenuous activity such as exercise. Most individuals drink less than their sweat losses during activity, while some individuals overdrink and develop a sodium deficiency. Water and electrolyte balance must be restored as part of the recovery process after any activity that causes sweating. Plain water causes a decrease in plasma sodium concentration and osmolality, which reduces the desire to drink and increases urine production. Unless the volume ingested exceeds the loss, individuals are in net negative fluid balance throughout the recovery period due to urinary losses. When sodium and potassium are added to rehydration fluids, urine production is reduced in the hours following rehydration. Rehydration is only possible if a volume of fluid equal to or greater than the amount lost through sweat is consumed, together with adequate electrolytes. The test products for this study, TP1 and TP2, are novel hydration beverage formulas. They are an electrolyte drink mixture with five essential vitamins and three times more electrolytes than typical sports beverages. The test products create an osmotic force that permits water to be supplied to the bloodstream sooner in the digestive system by using a specific ratio of sodium, glucose, and potassium. This randomized, placebo-controlled, semi-blind, crossover study will evaluate the effects of the test products on rehydration in healthy adults.
The aim of the clinical trial is to evaluate the efficacy of two novel hydration products on rehydration following exercise.
The purpose of this study is to examine and compare the rehydration effect of Essentia Water, an electrolyzed high-pH bottled water, with industry-standard bottled water purified by reverse osmosis with minerals added, on (1) whole blood viscosity, (2) plasma osmolality, (3) bioelectrical impedance analysis, and (4) body mass change, using serial measurements in apparently healthy adults following exercise-induced dehydration in a controlled environment.
Athletes participating in multiple training sessions a day can be at increased risk of suboptimal hydration and heat illness during their second training session, especially when the environment is hot and humid. With the exception of the absolute volume of water delivered by a rehydration beverage, characteristics of the beverage consumed play a role in the recovery and completeness of rehydration. The amount of sodium in the beverage has been shown to be a primary factor in rehydration. Recently, an effect of the carbohydrate concentration of the beverage was been reported, with its effects mediated by the renal system in response to elevated serum insulin. The purpose of this study is to compare sodium and carbohydrate effects on rehydration and recovery.
The objective of this study was to compare the individual pharmacokinetics of functional ingredients included in an oral rehydration solution (ORS) with or without the inclusion of active base ingredients (carbohydrate and electrolytes). The functional ingredients included in both the control and test solutions were Melatonin in conjunction with L-theanine (Arm 1), Caffeine in conjunction with L-theanine (Arm 2), and Vitamin C in conjunction with Zinc (Arm 3), across two study periods. The primary outcomes of this study included the relative pharmacokinetics of each functional ingredient. These included: maximum observed concentration (C max), time of maximum observed concentration (T max), cumulative Area Under the Curve (AUC) for each timepoint, (including AUC from the time of dosing to the time of last observation) and the concentration at each timepoint for the corresponding functional ingredients included in the specific study arm (i.e., melatonin, L-theanine, caffeine, vitamin C and zinc).

This is primarily based on the sodium-glucose co transporter, based on which the world health organization has based its oral rehydration solution recommendations. Also, rehydration with a solution that includes sodium and glucose plasma osmolality should not drop as much as it happens during rehydration with water. As a result, we should have higher fluid intake due to higher thirst perception and lower urinary output due to higher levels of vasopressin. The present study aims to examine the effectiveness of a electrolyte-glucose drink on rehydration following exercise-induced dehydration.

No studies to date to evaluate the effects of the three different liquid IV electrolyte products on the beverage hydration index (BHI). Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine the impact of three different LIV products (Hydration multiplier, Sugar Free formulation with Amino Acids, and Sugar Free with allulose) on hydration status in young and active men and women compared to a control (water). The study will follow the same approach as used by Maughan and colleagues (2016) to measure the fluid balance (the difference between the amount of water consumed and passed as urine) and BHI (the relative amount of urine passed after consumption of a drink compared to water) including time in positive fluid balance, as well as determining electrolyte concentrations, osmolality, specific gravity, and sodium and potassium in urine.
The goal of this clinical trial is to compare amino acid-fortified oral rehydration therapy (ORT) to the standard of care ORT in pediatric patients with acute gastroenteritis (AGE). The main questions it aims to answer are: * can amino acid-fortified ORT reduce the duration and severity of AGE compared to standard of care ORT? * can amino acid-fortified ORT increase the secretion of antimicrobial peptides in the gastrointestinal tract compared to standard of care ORT? Participants will be assigned to the experimental treatment (amino acid-fortified ORT) or the standard of care ORT and their disease severity, duration, and stool antimicrobial peptide content.

The low fluid intake in combination with a high intake of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) by children is a significant concern among public health professionals. Therefore reformulation of existing commercially available beverages has been suggested as one of the strategies to change SSB beverage behaviors of children. It has been suggested that lack of flavor in plain water is one of the factors of low water intake in children. Therefore, the addition of a flavor to a low-carbohydrate beverage might increase and facilitate the voluntary fluid intake in children, and result in more effective rehydration during and after exercise. The present study aims to examine if a lower sugar flavored water will improve voluntary hydration in children that perform multiple exercise bouts within a period of 3 hours.
The electrolyte test products are composed of powder and provided in individual stick packs with 5 vitamins including Vitamins B3, B5, B6, B12 and Vitamin C. The products are gluten-, soy-, and dairy-free, and provide electrolytes at concentrations well below the daily value (DV). The DV tells us how much a particular nutrient in a serving of a food product contributes to a daily diet, based on a standard 2000 calorie diet. Despite what the name suggests, this product is taken orally, not intravenously. These packets contain a small percentage of the needed total daily electrolytes but adequate amounts to replace lost electrolytes as a result of physical activity. The products will be consumed following a 90-minute bout of cycling exercise at a moderate intensity of 70-80% max heart rate, at 30-32°C (86-89°F) and 50 ± 5% relative humidity. This same exercise duration and room temperature has been used in a recent study, which also utilized the same body temperature monitoring device as proposed in the present study. The purpose of the exercise bout is to simulate what many individuals are exposed to when exercising in the heat and to moderately dehydrate subjects, as would be the case during a moderate run or cycling event in exercise-trained individuals. Subjects will report to the lab on three separate occasions to consume one of the 3 drinks (hydration multiplier, sugar-free hydration matrix, or water), in random order. The drinks will be consumed during the post-exercise period (30 minutes following the completion of exercise).
The present study aims to measure the impact of consuming a lower sugar flavored water compared to an equal amount of plain water during exercise on selected rehydration markers in healthy children. Participants will complete two experimental visits designed to examine the differentiating effects of one of two selected beverages (1) lower sugar flavored water beverage and 2) plain water) on certain hydration markers and related perceptual variables during repeated bouts of exercise in a warm environment to induce mild dehydration.

To compare length of stay (LOS) of pediatric patients in a pediatric emergency room presenting with Gastroenteritis treated with IV rehydration versus oral Speedlyte rehydration.
This study will assess the tolerability and palatability of an amino acid based oral rehydration solution (enterade®) compared to current oral rehydration solution among children with short bowel syndrome .
We and others have shown that many younger patients with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) have orthostatic intolerance (OI), i.e., they can't tolerate prolonged standing. OI in ME/CFS is often accompanied by either postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS) in which standing results in an excessive heart rate, and neurally mediated hypotension (NMH) in which standing causes a fall in blood pressure and fainting. Intravenous fluids can alleviate these symptoms, but is difficult to administer; oral fluids fail to provide the same benefit. We would therefore like to test the effectiveness of an oral rehydration solution (ORS, W.H.O. formula) making use of co-transport of glucose and sodium, to reverse these symptoms in ME/CFS subjects with POTS or NMS, and will compare these results with healthy control subjects.
Compliance is the biggest challenge in patients with Short Bowel Syndrome (SBS) on Home Parenteral Nutrition. These patients need to hydrate themselves to meet the excess fluid loss due to their anatomy. Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) is prescribed to all these patients. The investigators believe that taste of the standard ORS is the biggest reason why these patients are not complaint. The new ORS in the market has been prepared with this in mind. The investigators want to study if this new ORS will improve the compliance in this patient cohort.
In patients with moderate to severe thermal injuries (\> 20% TBSA) adequate fluid resuscitation is the main priority to achieve successful outcomes. Soon after burn injury substantial amounts of fluid accumulate rapidly in the wound while more is lost in the third space. Without intervention this process leads to hypotension and shock. The Parkland formula was devised to calculate how much intravenous (IV) fluid, i.e. crystalloids, is needed for adequate resuscitation during the first 24 hours post-burn. However, IV resuscitation can lead to overexpansion of (third space) volume, leading to severe complications such as compartment syndrome or pulmonary edema. In major population centers, catastrophic events causing mass casualties will disrupt many hospital and emergency services, potentially delaying acute IV fluid resuscitation. Burn patient case reports have shown that oral rehydration therapy (ORT) used to supplement or in place of IV therapy is efficacious. ORT could be easily applied in mass burn casualties. ORT is generally known in the third world for treating life-threatening dehydration due to diarrhea. The glucose-sodium co transport mechanism enables the affected human intestine to absorb a sufficient amount of water and electrolytes to replace large fluid losses due to severe diarrhea, even under adverse field conditions. No electrolyte disturbances have been recorded in such cases. Studies on enteral resuscitation in animal burn models showed high rates of small intestinal absorption which should be adequate for resuscitation following major burn injury. The optimal composition of oral rehydration solution for resuscitation in burn wounds has not been determined. In cholera patients, Ceralyte® has proven superior to the World Health Organization Oral Rehydration Solution, increasing fluid absorption of the intestine. The Ceralyte® 90 solution, with 90mEq/L sodium and a low osmolarity of \<275mOsm, may also contribute to optimal intestinal fluid uptake without causing electrolyte disturbances in thermal injury. ORT use might reduce the occurrence of compartment syndrome and pulmonary edema since fluid is regulated by the intestine according to physiologic requirements. The investigators propose to conduct a prospective study using Ceralyte® 90 to show that oral resuscitation therapy (ORT) in burns can reduce the total amount of IV fluid needed for adequate resuscitation and to test the efficacy and safety of ORT in the resuscitation of burn patients.
The purpose of this study is to non-invasively study the reflective changes in cardiac output as response to fluid therapy in the pediatric moderate hypovolemia/dehydrated pediatric patients using sub-q rehydration using Hylenex augmented subcutaneous infusion of fluids and electrolytes compared to intravenous methods.
Randomized (1:1 ratio) study of subcutaneous (SC) versus intravenous (IV) fluid rehydration in mildly to moderately dehydrated pediatric patients.
The "beverage hydration index" (BHI) assesses the hydration potential of any consumable fluid relative to water. The BHI is a relatively new metric. Our purpose was to assess the BHI of beverages never previously tested, including an amino acid-based oral rehydration solution (AA-ORS), a glucose-containing ORS (G-ORS) and a sports drink (SD) compared to water (control).
Test whether Basic Life Support (BLS) providers can successfully place Enzymatically Augmented Subcutaneous Infusion (EASI) Access lines for subcutaneous infusion, and characterize intravascular absorption of EASI-administered (tracer-labelled) glucose (D5W).
Older adults typically do not drink later in the day to avoid the necessity of interrupting sleep to urinate. Sometimes they also limit ingestion of fluids to avoid the need to urinate when engaged in certain activities such as traveling or attending an event. Therefore, beverages that have greater fluid retention in the body leading to a more sustained positive hydration status could be advantageous in such situations. The composition of a beverage as well as other factors such as volume ingested and metabolism of components can affect the retention of the fluid in the body. Age may be another factor. The beverage hydration index (BHI), first described in 2016, was used to indicate the hydration response to thirteen well-known beverages in young male adults. The current study assesses the BHI of four beverages and how that response is affected by age following the standardized protocol. The four beverages have been chosen for inclusion in this study because they have been used by older adults to prevent dehydration.
The purpose is to characterize the in-line pressure profiles associated with several infusion technique factors during subcutaneous (SC) infusion of Lactated Ringer's solution, preceded by recombinant human hyaluronidase (hylenex). The safety and tolerability of hylenex-augmented SC infusion of Lactated Ringer's solution fluid is also being evaluated.
The purpose is to evaluate the ease of use and technical challenges encountered during subcutaneous infusion of Lactated Ringer's (LR) solution, preceded by recombinant human hyaluronidase (hylenex), utilizing commonly used angiocatheter gauges and button delivery systems. The safety and tolerability of hylenex-augmented SC infusion of LR through these delivery systems is also being evaluated.
