RESET-CKD is evaluating an intervention to support Black adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD) to reduce their sedentary (e.g., sitting) time. Half of the participants will be randomized to the intervention, where the goal is to support individuals to reduce their sitting time, and the other half will be randomized to an attention control condition that provides CKD-related education not related to sedentary behavior. All participants will be followed for 12 weeks.
This study will test the effects of a sedentary behavior intervention on pain processing, blood bio-markers and pain symptoms in individuals with chronic low back pain. The behavioral intervention will include a wrist-worn activity monitor that will notify participants when they have been sedentary for too long, motivational interviewing, and habit development.
This is an interventional study that will examine how sedentary behavior (decreased physical inactivity) over time affects cardiovascular health (i.e. heart rate and blood pressure) and sleep quality/duration.
This study employs a Sequential Multiple Assignment Randomized Trial (SMART) and aims to determine the most effective adaptive intervention combining four efficacious treatments (enhanced physical activity monitor, motivational text messages, motivational personal calls, group meetings) to increase physical activity and improve cardiovascular health among sedentary employed women.
Diabetes Prevention Program translational efforts, such as the Group Lifestyle Balance Program (GLB), have been shown to be effective in reducing weight and modifying diabetes and CVD risk factors in a variety of diverse community settings. Although one of the two primary goals of these DPP translation programs focuses on increasing physical activity levels, few published DPP translation studies reported results on change in physical activity with only one study reporting activity levels from an objective measurement instrument. In order to completely understand the role that physical activity plays in making healthy lifestyle change, it is critical that we validate the impact of activity using a valid and reliable objective measure. In addition, current studies suggest that decreasing time spent sitting may have a positive health impact separate from the effects of participating in planned bouts of moderate intensity activity. Therefore, we propose to examine the impact of a modified version of the GLB program, which will focus on decreasing sedentary/sitting behaviors. The results of this project will provide information regarding best options for physical activity within lifestyle intervention programs, focusing both on verifying the current role of physical activity in lifestyle intervention using an objective measure and on examining an alternative intervention option for translation efforts.
Interview colorectal cancer survivors and use this input to create a brochure intended to guide reduction of sedentary behaviors in this population. Have colorectal cancer survivors review and comment on a draft of the brochure. A third group of colorectal cancer survivors will wear an Actigraph activity monitor for one week, then receive feedback on their activity level with the brochure. After one month this group will be surveyed by telephone regarding their use of the brochure, and their physical activity level.
The purpose of this study was to determine whether the installation of sit-stand work stations could lead to decreased sedentary time and increased physical activity during the workday among sedentary office workers.
This study evaluated the efficacy of a 12-week Internet intervention to help sedentary older adults adopt and maintain an exercise regimen. A total of 368 men and women over 55 years of age (x = 60.3; SD 4.9 ) were recruited and screened on line. They randomized into treatment and control groups and assessed at pre-test, 12 weeks, and at six months. The multivariate model was significant at posttest (p = .001; large effect size) and at six months (p = .001; medium effect size). At posttest, intervention participation showed significant improvement on 13 of 14 outcome measures compared to the control group. At six months, treatment group participants were found to maintain large gains compared to the Ctrl participants on all 14 measures.
The goal of this observational study is to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of a 12-week intervention utilizing a Fitbit and artificial intelligence (AI)-delivered diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES) with tailored text messages. The main question it aims to answer is: Does providing a wearable fitness and activity tracker plus AI-tailored and DSMES improve clinical outcomes for patients with type 2 diabetes? Participants will complete a baseline visit, wear a Fitbit and answer text messages for 12-weeks, and complete by a final visit.

Our goal in this study is to further refine StandUPTV, an application designed to reduce SST in adults in our first study (ASU IRB # STUDY00012109), for the StandUPTV Habits program. This program aims to establish a non-sedentary habit triggered by an alert from the StandUPTV application after participants engage in approximately 30 minutes of SST in the evening.
Women with a history of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are at a 2-fold greater risk for the development of overt cardiovascular disease (CVD) following the effected pregnancy. While subsequent development of type II diabetes elevates this risk, prior GDM is an independent risk factor for CVD morbidity, particularly, within the first decade postpartum. GDM is associated with impaired endothelial function during pregnancy and decrements in macro- and microvascular function persist postpartum, despite the remission of insulin resistance following delivery. Collectively, while the association between GDM and elevated lifetime CVD risk is clear, and available evidence demonstrates a link between GDM and vascular dysfunction in the decade following pregnancy, the mechanisms mediating this persistent dysfunction remain unexamined. The purpose of this investigation is to examine the role of endothelin-1, a potent vasoconstrictor, in aberrant microvascular function in otherwise healthy women with a history of GDM and to identify whether this mechanism is influenced by physical activity and sedentary behavior.
This is a 12-week randomized, controlled trial that seeks to examine the effect of Vivo on 1) change in lower extremity strength defined as number of chair stands done in 30 seconds and 2) change in average glycemic level (HbA1c) compared to a wait list control.

The goal of this clinical trial to test whether a remotely delivered behavioral activation-based intervention called "teleABLE" works better than a health education intervention for (1) reducing sitting time and (2) improving health-related quality among adults who were diagnosed with stroke within the past 12 months. Participants in this study will: * Complete questionnaires at Weeks 1, 8, and 24 * Wear an activPAL monitor at Weeks 1, 8, and 24 * Participate in the teleABLE intervention (12 sessions) or the health education intervention (6 sessions) * Complete an interview at Week 24
The disparate burden of Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) faced by Black individuals makes attention to preventing or delaying the development of T2D and its associated cardiovascular (CV) complications, essential. Similar to differences in cardiovascular disease (CVD) rates across racial and ethnic groups of older people, there are differences in engagement in physical activity (PA), a significant contributor to CVD. Black adults are less likely to engage in physical activity PA than their non-Hispanic White peers, with 26.7% of Black Minnesotans reporting that they did not engage any leisure-time PA in the past month, compared to 19.6% of non-Hispanic White Minnesotans. Notably, recent research has demonstrated that high amounts SB (i.e., sitting or lying with low levels of energy expenditure) also have significant detrimental effects on health, beyond those of physical inactivity. Experimental data from lab-based studies demonstrate that breaking up prolonged SB can rapidly improve markers of cardiometabolic risk (e.g., glucose and endothelial function) but the majority of these studies have focused on young, healthy, White adults. Given the significant inequities and health disparities faced by Black individuals and the lack of adequate representation of Black older adults in studies examining SB in individuals with T2D, understanding psychosocial and societal contributors to and consequences of SB experienced by this population is an essential first step toward developing relevant interventions targeting SB, and ultimately, CV health. Using the Center for Chronic Disease Reduction and Equity Promotion Across Minnesota (C2DREAM) conceptual model, social-ecological framework, and COM-B model, the study will seek to understand the relationship between SB and individual, relationship, community, and societal factors. The study will also examine the context of SB and strategies that participants have used and could or would consider using to break up the time they spend sitting.
The goal of this pilot clinical trial is to test if a mobile health intervention, including a wearable fitness tracker with inactivity-triggered reminders to move, individualized coaching sessions, and an app-based peer support group, can decrease sedentary time (time spent sitting/lying down and inactive) in adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) receiving maintenance chemotherapy. The main questions it aims to answer are: * Is the intervention a feasible and acceptable way to decrease sedentary time among adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with ALL? * Does the intervention show evidence that it may decrease sedentary time? * Does the intervention show evidence that it may increase quality of life, reduce inflammation, and improve glucose and lipid metabolism? Participants will use their fitness tracker with reminders to move as well as support from other intervention participants and coaching with study staff to gradually decrease their sedentary time over 10 weeks. Researchers will compare participant pre- and post-intervention study measures to see if the program may be helpful to decrease sedentary time in adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with ALL. All participants will wear an activity tracker on the thigh for 7 days at the beginning and end of the study as well as complete quality of life questionnaires. Study labs will be collected three times (baseline, 8 weeks, and 12 weeks) over the course of the 12-week study. All in-person study visits and labs will occur in conjunction with Oncology clinic visits for maintenance chemotherapy.
The goal of this behavioral clinical trial is to compare two different ways of becoming less sedentary and more active in 60 older adults at elevated risk of becoming frail. The main question this project aims to answer are whether participants in each intervention are able to gradually replace 30 minutes of sedentary (sitting-like) behavior with very light walking over 60 days. There are other questions this project aims to answer that include: 1. whether it is easier to replace sedentary behavior with one 30-minute walking bout or three 10-minute walking bouts 2. whether becoming less sedentary and more active leads to feeling better, have less stress, pain, and fatigue and have more confidence in becoming more regularly active 3. whether becoming less sedentary and more active leads to better regulation of inflammation and metabolism Participants will be randomized into one of two sedentary reduction behavior programs; one program that gradually replaces sedentary time with one 30-minute walking bout and the other program that gradually replaces sedentary time with three 10-minute walking bouts in the morning, afternoon, and evening. Researchers will compare both programs to see which one is easier to achieve and maintain over 60 days.
Type 2 diabetes (T2D) confers a high risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), particularly among older adults who tend to be physically inactive. Prolonged sedentary behavior (SB) has been shown to negatively influence markers of cardiovascular risk (e.g., blood glucose, blood pressure), even among individuals who are physically active. Most studies that have examined the effects of breaking up SB have focused on young healthy males and prioritized glycemic outcomes. Additionally, sex differences in these outcomes have not been adequately examined. The present study will address these gaps. This 3-arm crossover randomized controlled trial will compare the effects of 3 SB conditions on markers of vascular function. The 3 conditions are: 1) 4 hours of prolonged SB, 2) 4 hours of SB broken up by 5 minutes of self-paced walking every hour, and 3) 4 hours of SB with one 20-minute bout of self-paced walking. In addition to examining the overall effects of each condition, sex differences in physiological responses will be evaluated.
The purpose of this study is to develop and test an 8-week sedentary behavior reduction intervention ("Sit Less" program) for patients with type 2 diabetes. The program aims to reduce and break sitting times among this population using an objective activity monitor and mHealth. The investigators will test the program to help diabetes patients break up sitting time, reduce daily sitting time, and move more. The investigators will also study preliminary effects of the SB reduction intervention on light physical activity, cardiometabolic markers and patient-centered outcomes, and whether diabetes patients like the program and can follow it.
Previous research has found improvements in performance (VO2max) and clinical (insulin resistance) with cycling REHIIT. In some populations (e.g. obese, arthritic) aquatic exercise is a safer, more enjoyable option. However, to date, no study has yet examined whether aquatic REHIIT confers the same benefits as land-based REHIIT. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine whether there are significant differences in clinical and performance outcomes between a land-based and comparable aquatics based Reduced Exertion High Intensity Interval Training (REHIIT) protocol.
The purpose of this study is to develop and test a 12-week sedentary behavior reduction intervention ("Sit Less" program) for patients with cardiovascular disease. The investigators will test the program to help cardiovascular disease patients break up sitting time, reduce daily sitting time, and move more. The investigators will also study whether the program leads to improvements in heart disease risk factors, and whether cardiovascular disease patients like the program and can follow it.
The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effectiveness of a DeskCycle intervention in reducing sedentary behavior by increasing the time spent participating in light to moderate physical activity in a randomly selected group of desk job employees at Kent State University main campus. The study also assessed the feasibility of using the DeskCycle in the working environment, as well as the effect on weight and mood. The primary outcome of interest was the 'mean minutes of light to moderate physical activity'. Secondary outcomes include weight, mood score, and feasibility of using the DeskCycle. The study was a randomized controlled trial (RCT) with a cross-over design where differences between the intervention and control group were evaluated over an eight-week period, after which there was a switch and the DeskCycles were given to the control group to use for the eight-week period that followed. The allocation during the first eight-week period intervention will be done through random process.
The purpose of this Phase 1 research study is to answer two questions: (1) How frequent should periods of prolonged sedentary time be interrupted? and (2) What is the appropriate duration or length of time of these breaks in sedentary time? To address these questions, this project will conduct a state-of-the-art adaptive dose finding study under controlled laboratory conditions to determine the minimally effective dose (the smallest dose) that yields cardiometabolic benefit for two separate sedentary break elements (frequency and duration). Study findings will ultimately determine how often and for how long people should break up periods of prolonged sedentary time to transiently improve established cardiovascular risk factors; key foundational information critical to the success of future long-term trials and ultimately public health guidelines. Primary Aim: To determine the minimally effective dose combination(s) of frequency and duration needed to provide cardiometabolic benefit during an 8-hour experimentation period. Specifically, the study will determine: 1a. For each fixed duration, the minimum sedentary break frequency (e.g., every 30 min, 60 min, 120 min) that demonstrates a reduction in systolic BP, diastolic BP, or glucose compared with a sedentary control condition. 1b. For each fixed frequency, the minimum sedentary break duration (e.g., activity breaks of 1 min, 5 min, 10 min) that demonstrates a reduction in systolic BP, diastolic BP, or glucose compared with a sedentary control. Secondary Aim: It is also critical to public health strategy to assess the acceptability/feasibility of various sedentary break doses as too high a dose will yield poor uptake. To address this need, the maximally tolerated dose (the highest dose that does not cause undue physical/psychological distress) for frequency and duration of sedentary breaks will also be determined via assessment of 4 constructs: physical exhaustion/fatigue, affect (e.g., mood, emotion), tolerability (e.g., completion of dose protocol), and safety (e.g., hypoglycemia). Maximally tolerated dose will be defined as the highest dose where \<20% of participants exhibit an adverse outcome.
Competitive sport increases risk for musculoskeletal injury (e.g., traumatic knee injury) and may position former athletes for early onset of chronic diseases, chronic pain, poor health-related quality of life, and disability. Quantifying function in former athletes with and without a prior injury and non-athlete controls is critical to understanding long-term health trajectories in athletes and informing potential interventional studies. One modifiable factor that may be associated with long-term health in athletes is physical activity patterns. The purpose of this study is to evaluate strength, function, physical activity, dietary patterns, and cardiometabolic health among current and former competitive athletes and in nonathlete controls to evaluate the impact of prior knee injury and sedentary behavior as two potential determinants of later poor health and reduced function.
The proposed study will test the preliminary efficacy of a novel 12-week social cognitive theory-based intervention that will target reducing daily sitting time and increasing exercise participation among middle-aged working adults. This is a population highly susceptible to excessive sedentary time and low levels of exercise engagement. This two-arm randomized controlled trial (RCT) will examine the preliminary efficacy of decreasing sedentary time in addition to increasing moderate-vigorous intensity physical activity (MVPA) engagement, compared to a group which only receives MVPA promotion.
To learn if an 8-week, phone-based texting intervention program will reduce sedentary (non-mobile) behavior.
