Hand Exoskeleton Training Study
Description

The goal of this study is to evaluate the HandMATE device's effectiveness in the rehabilitation of stroke patients and asses if the HandMATE application is received well by stroke survivors. Participants will use the HandMate device in clinic and in the home. They will also complete clinical upper extremity assessments.

Infant-Maternal Partnership and Cognitive Training Study for Preterm Infants
Description

This study will test the hypothesis that in preterm infants a caregiver-implemented early developmental intervention (EDI) using finger puppets to develop joint attention and encourage interactive communication with routine EDI care including Bookworm training compared with routine EDI care including Bookworm training alone will increase the Ages and Stages Questionnaire® score at 12 months corrected age.

Exercise Training Study Before Bariatric Surgery
Description

The goal of this clinical trial is to figure out if 8 weeks of walking exercise before bariatric surgery improves risk factors for diabetes and other markers of health. This is important as it may help reduce complications after surgery, improve health markers and increase physical activity levels after surgery (which is an important marker of maintaining bariatric weight loss). The main question that this study is trying to answer is whether walking improves a risk factor for type 2 diabetes called insulin sensitivity (how well your body is able to use glucose). Adults planning to have bariatric surgery will be recruited from the Charlottesville VA area. Before they have their surgery, participants will be randomly assigned (like flipping a coin) to a group that participates in 8 weeks of walking on a treadmill (2-3 times a week) or a group that does their normal care before bariatric surgery. Researchers will compare the effects of walking before bariatric surgery on: * Insulin sensitivity (diabetes risk factor) * Health of blood vessels * Rate of complications after surgery * Weight * Body Fat * Fitness level

Career Enhancement Training Study Delivered Across Career Phases
Description

This trial tests the effectiveness of the Wingman-Connect Program delivered by USAF personnel on individual suicide risk. Randomization will be among classes at Initial Technical Training, in which 396 classes of USAF personnel will be randomized to Wingman-Connect or to an active control training (N=2,970 Airmen) and followed for one year. These classes send a proportion of graduates to Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) \& Air Mobility Command (AMC) operational bases.

Vascular Positioning System G4 Algorithm ECG Data Collection for Model Training Study
Description

The objective of this study is to collect intravascular and extravascular echocardiogram (ECG) data from subjects receiving peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC) while using the Vascular Positioning System G4 and a 12 lead ECG machine. The data obtained will be used to update the G4 algorithm.

Executive Functioning Training Study
Description

Cognitive aging in people with HIV (PWH) is of increasing concern for several reasons: 1) between 52%-59% of PWH experience cognitive impairment known as HIV-Associated Neurocognitive Disorder (HAND) which impacts everyday functioning and quality of life; 2) HAND increases in severity and prevalence with age; and 3) 70% of PWH in the United States will be 50 and older by 2030. Fortunately, cognitive training programs can individually target specific cognitive impairments in PWH and possibly reduce the severity and prevalence of HAND and improve everyday functioning and quality of life. This approach is based around the underlying concept of intra-individual variability as controlled through higher level allocation of cognitive resources, known as executive functioning. This feasibility study will use a two-group pre-post experimental design of adults with HAND including: 1) a 20-hours of Executive Functioning Training group (enroll 60, n=48 with attrition), and 2) a no-contact control (enroll 60, n=48 with attrition). Aim 1 - Feasibility: To determine feasibility and acceptability of the intervention (i.e., attrition, feedback). Exploratory Aim 1 - Cognition: Compare adults who receive Executive Functioning Training to those who receive no training to determine whether they improve in global cognitive ability and overall cognitive IIV. This high impact study is innovative in the following ways: 1) This is the first study aimed to reduce cognitive IIV in PWH. 2) This is the first study to use IIV as a guide to target solely executive functioning training to improve global cognitive ability, which may reduce the severity and prevalence of HAND. 3) Over the last decade, the epicenter of HIV has emerged in the Deep South where this study will occur. Most participants in this study will be older PWH who identify as lower social economic status (SES) and/or African Americans and experience HAND symptoms.

HIIT vs. MICT Training Study
Description

The purpose of this study is to compare the impact of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) versus moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) on human health outcomes in healthy sedentary subjects, over 12 weeks of exercise training. The investigators will compare several health parameters, such as changes in multiomics profile, cardiorespiratory fitness, muscle strength, and body composition, before and after 12-week interventions of either HIIT or MICT.

Blood Flow Regulation in Individuals With Down Syndrome - Training Study
Description

Work capacity is an important predictor of declining health or physical function, and of mortality, and is commonly measured as peak oxygen consumption. Peak oxygen consumption is very low in individuals with Down syndrome, the most prevalent genetic cause of intellectual disability. Previous research suggests individuals with Down syndrome may experience a double disadvantage when they are exercising: they may not be able to increase cardiac output sufficiently and they may not be able to allocate adequate blood flow to the working muscles. The aim of this research proposal is therefore to investigate the responses in central and peripheral blood flow regulation and cardiac autonomic function to exercise training in individuals with DS. Additionally the effects of exercise on gait, balance and attitude towards exercise in individuals with DS are investigated.

The Stealth Pet Obedience Training Study
Description

Americans love pets. Nearly 1 in 2 American households (44%) own at least one pet dog and more than 1 in 3 (35%) own a cat. The bond people form with their pets can be powerful and can provide many mental and physical health benefits. In the case of pet dogs, a strong dog-owner bond increases the odds of regular dog walking, which can help owners meet physical activity guidelines. When the bond is strong, owners feel a sense of responsibility to walk the dog, as well as motivation and social support to walk. Dog walking may be a particularly sustainable form of physical activity as dogs require regular exercise throughout their lives, across all seasons. Owners less bonded to their dogs are less likely to walk them regularly and 40% of owners report never walking their dog. Obedience training may strengthen the dog-owner bond. Thus, the proposed study will test the hypotheses that obedience training can 1) strengthen the dog-owner bond, and 2) promote physical activity among owners. Forty dog owners who do not regularly walk their dog will be randomized to a 6-week obedience training course (n=20) or a control group that does not receive dog training (n=20). The investigators will assess the strength of the dog-owner bond (via questionnaires) and physical activity levels (via a wearable activity monitor) before training, immediately after completing training, and 6 weeks after completing training. The hypothesis is that the dog-owner bond will strengthen and physical activity levels will increase in the intervention group as compared to the control group. As over 50 million American households own a dog, support for this hypothesis would support further investigation of dog obedience training as a novel strategy for promoting public health.

Healthy Relationships Training Study: A Comparison of Interventions to Reduce Dating Violence on College Campuses
Description

The purpose of this study is to compare the efficacy of a mindfulness-based skills training (MBST) to a psychoeducational intervention at reducing dating violence in a sample of college students. The MBST focuses on improving college students' abilities to manage emotionally charged states during conflict with their romantic partners by teaching them mindfulness-based skills. The psychoeducational intervention uses the Love is Not Abuse curriculum. Treatment groups are randomly assigned and are compared using a two-armed parallel design. 88 college students currently in a dating relationship were recruited through Kent State University's subject pool. All participants completed a baseline assessment online where self-reported data was collected on demographics, dating violence (during the past month), emotion regulation, mindfulness skills, and other potential covariates. Participants were then randomized into either the MBST intervention or the psychoeducational intervention. All participants completed three 50-minute sessions over the course of three weeks with assigned homework between sessions. Daily diary data was collected, assessing knowledge and use of skills learned in the sessions. Follow-up data was collected online 11 weeks following baseline (dating violence (during the last month), emotion regulation, mindfulness skills). It was hypothesized that the MBST intervention would be more effective at reducing dating violence as compared to the psychoeducational intervention.

Sickle Cell Pro-Inflammatory Response to Interval Training Study
Description

Recommendations for exercise prescription currently do not exist for individuals with sickle cell anemia (SCA) despite the known impact that SCA-related complications has on physical functioning and fitness. A major barrier to increasing physical activity in SCA is the concern that the well-described inflammatory effects of exercise could precipitate or exacerbate complications such as vaso-occlusive pain or airway bronchoconstriction (i.e. exercise-induced asthma). Although the investigator's preliminary data suggest that increasing physical activity may be beneficial rather than harmful in children with SCA, the pro-inflammatory effects associated with repeated bouts of moderate to vigorous exercise remain poorly understood in this population. The long term goal is to address the safety and health impact of regular exercise in children with SCA. This proposal would help establish the safety of moderate to vigorous intensity exercise in children with SCA and importantly, will inform the design of future clinical trials focused on exercise training as a transformative strategy to improve fitness and overall well-being in this population.

SPARC Bladder Mapping and Training Study
Description

The investigators propose to determine the electrode configurations that promote functional gains in the storage and voiding phases of lower urinary tract function as a result of activation of spinal circuits with spinal cord epidural stimulation in humans with spinal cord injury. The innovative approach and novel application of the Medtronic Specify 5-6-5 (16-electrode array) epidural device will allow the investigators to determine, with this early feasibility study, specific parameters of spinal cord epidural stimulation and approaches for bladder training needed for lower urinary tract function which will lay the groundwork for expedient translation of this promising technology to larger numbers of individuals with spinal cord injury who currently have limited treatment options. The current proposed study will increase the understanding of human lumbosacral spinal networks and guide the use of innovative therapeutic strategies that would be immediately available to not only improve the motor output during standing and walking but also ameliorate bladder dysfunction and thus improve quality of life in individuals after spinal cord injury.

This study will train participants (young people and older adults) to do a visual task, and will assess whether this results in changes in behavioral assessments. In some participants, we will be also testing whether MRI measures (cortical thickness, functional connectivity) change with training.

Low Intensity Blood Flow Restriction Training Study
Description

The particpant will complete baseline testing by measuring subjects' quadriceps muscle thickness (cm) via ultrasound technology, as well as have them complete a one repetition maximum (1RM) test on the leg press machine and an isometric knee extension using a dynamometer - strength measures will be calculated for both right and left legs. After baseline testing, subjects will complete 6 weeks of the testing protocol that will consist of leg press exercises at 30% of their 1RM. Subjects will be randomized to either wear a cuff that partially restricts blood flow to the limb (Study Group), or to wear a cuff that does not restrict blood flow (Control Group). Exercises will be completed 2x/week and will take approximately 10 total minutes (5 for warm up, 5 for testing protocol) per session. After 6 weeks, muscle thickness, leg press 1RM, and quadriceps extension strength will be re-tested and compared to the initial measurements.

Memory and Exercise Training Study in Older Adults With Subjective Memory Complaints
Description

This pilot study is a first step in a rapidly growing area of clinical research to create the most effective means to combat age-related losses in cognitive function through preventive lifestyle strategies such as physical exercise and memory training. This study will develop innovative simultaneous exercise and memory training programs in non-demented volunteers with subjective memory complaints (controls or MCI). Our primary goal is to assess the cognitive impact of 4-week memory training programs done twice weekly: 1. during simultaneous aerobic exercise (SIM-AR-MET), 2. sequentially after aerobic exercise (SEQ-AR-MET), or 3. without aerobic exercise (replaced with sequential stretching and toning) (SEQ-ST-MET). The investigators will also measure potential metabolic (e.g., glucose, lipid panel) and molecular (serum BDNF) mediators of observed cognitive changes in a subset of participants (those at the UCLA CTRC/IPCN site).
