Vibrator Use to Improve Sexual and Pelvic Floor Function Among Urogynecology Patients
Description

Limited data exist describing the use and role of vibrators in a urogynecology population and no randomized controlled trials investigating the use of vibrators as a therapeutic tool to enhance sexual and pelvic floor function in urogynecology patients has been conducted. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of vibrator use in improving sexual and pelvic floor function in urogynecology patients who report sexual dysfunction.

Handheld Vibrator Versus Topical Eye Drops as Anesthesia for Intravitreal Injections
Description

Intravitreal injections are an efficient method of delivering therapeutic levels of medications to the posterior segment of the eye. Prior to receiving an injection, there are various methods to provide ocular anesthesia. Vibration may have an anti-nociceptive effect by directly decreasing the sensitivity of peripheral nociceptors or by reducing signal transmission from peripheral nociceptors to the brain with activation of vibratory sensation pathways. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the use of a handheld fingertip vibrator compared to topical eye drops for pain control while performing intravitreal eye injections. A secondary objective of the study is to measure corneal and conjunctiva sensitivity with and without activation of the vibrator to the lower lid using a Luneau Cochet-Bonnet aesthesiometer.

Patient Augmented Reality and Vibratory Array Otorhinolaryngology Procedures
Description

In-office procedures (IOPs) are a cost-effective, and safe alternative to many operating room procedure, with benefits such as reduced anesthesia risk. One of the major causes of failed in-office procedures or requirement of conversion to the operating room is poor patient tolerance. Vibration and augmented reality (AR) can be used as non-pharmacologic treatment options to treat patient anxiety and pain by using the physiology proposed by the gate-way theory of pain as well as distraction. This study seeks to compare anxiety and pain perception with patient reported survey data, as well as physiologic indicators of stress such as heart rate variability (HRV) within patients undergoing IOPs in a laryngology office with and without vibration and AR treatment.

Vibratory Stimulation to Improve Balance Recovery
Description

Falls are the primary cause of traumatic injury in older adults, and tripping is the leading cause of falls. A robust method for improving aging-related proprioceptive deficits is lacking, while strong evidence shows that proprioception deficits are highly associated with poor balance recovery from tripping. Previous research suggested that stochastic vibratory stimulation (SVS) can influence proprioception (i.e., muscle spindle function) among healthy controls; however, it is not clear how older adults with deficits in muscle spindle function would react to SVS. In previous work the investigators showed promising findings of standing balance and timed-up-and-go (TUG) improvements using SVS among high fall risk older adults with history of fall 15-18. They will implement SVS in the current project to improve aging-related proprioceptive deficits. The hypothesis is that SVS improves muscle spindle function and balance recovery from tripping in older adults with proprioceptive deficits.

Vibratory Anesthesia in Trigger Finger Injections
Description

This study aims to compare the effectiveness of the use of no topical anesthesia, topical coolant, and the use of vibration in the reduction of pain during trigger finger injections. This will be done by randomizing patients who are diagnosed with trigger finger, warrant and choose to continue with a steroid injection into each of the respective anesthetic (or lack thereof) methods described. After conducting this and gathering data on the subjects pain felt, we will compare the analgesia from each of the anesthetic methods.

Vibratory Stimulation for the Treatment of Chronic Pain
Description

The purpose of this study is to perform a first in man study with VCR stimulation of the belly and back for patients with chronic pain conditions including pelvic pain, functional abdominal pain, or low back pain. This study will also examine VCR stimulation of the temporal region for patients with migraine with or without aura. Additional goals of the study will be to determine the safety, tolerability, and acceptability of VCR stimulation for the treatment of these pain conditions.

Effect of a Vibratory Stimulus on Mitigating Nociception-specific Responses to Skin Puncture in Neonates
Description

The assessment and treatment of pain in neonates remains a challenge. In an effort to improve the quality of care while limiting opioid-related adverse effects, this study aims to determine the efficacy of a non-pharmacological intervention on the mitigation of nociception-specific responses to a skin breaking procedure in term and preterm neonates. Such responses will be measured using behavioral measures as well as with electroencephalography-based methods.

Description

This study will evaluate the acute effects of vibration (whole body vibration and local muscle vibration) on quadriceps function, knee joint proprioception, and gait biomechanics linked to osteoarthritis development in individuals with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Subjects will be randomly assigned to control (no vibration), whole body vibration, and local muscle vibration groups, and the aforementioned characteristics will be assessed prior to and following the respective interventions.
