The Effects of Stress & Irregular Shift Hours on First Responders
Description

First Responders are expected to maintain high-performance levels under extreme conditions. However, constant intense workplace stress, physical work demands, and irregular shift hours are taking a severe toll on frontline workers. These demands often lead to physical and mental health problems, poor job performance, and lifestyle issues. Without better support and resources, these demands will continue to cause first responders to be trapped in a vicious cycle that typically includes occupational trauma, stress, and maladaptive coping skills. The purpose of this research is to: 1. Better understand the physiological, psychological, and cognitive impacts workplace stress and irregular shift hours have on first responders 2. Better understand the most prominent challenges first responders face when trying to manage their own physical and mental health. Through the results of this study, we hope to identify possible solutions/interventions at the individual, clinical and departmental levels to help first responders better manage their stress and improve their quality of life.

Are Mindfulness Programs in the Workplace Effective at Reducing Stress
Description

The objective of this study is to determine whether a mindfulness coaching program was efficacious at reducing work stress, improving psychological and physical health outcomes, and improving work outcomes. The target population is employed adults (18 years and older) working in the industries of media, consulting, and healthcare.

Mind/Body Stress Management to Improve Outcomes in Workplace Weight Loss Programs
Description

The purpose of this study is to explore the efficacy of a phone-based weight loss program that has stress management techniques integrated throughout (Weight Talk-Mindfulness). The program is targeted at employees of certain companies who meet a cut-off score on a measure of stress-related eating. The control group will receive a standard phone-based program with no additional stress management information (Weight Talk-Standard). * Hypothesis 1: Participants in Weight Talk-Mindfulness (WT-M; n=50) will experience decreases in their stress-related \& emotion-related eating compared to the Weight Talk-Standard (WT-S; n=25) group. * Hypothesis 2: The WT-M group will lose more weight compared to the WT-S control group. * Hypothesis 3: Participants in WT-M will experience decreased perceived stress, increased eating self-efficacy, increased acceptance of weight-related thoughts \& feelings and increased mindfulness compared to those in the WT-S control arm. * Hypothesis 4: Participants in WT-M will be equally as satisfied with their weight loss program as those in WT-S.

VR Exercise Intervention in a Workplace Setting
Description

This research study is designed to better understand how a virtual reality (VR) exercise application may influence overall physical activity and well-being. VR games can make exercise more enjoyable and interactive, which has been shown to increase engagement in physical activity. Adult participants will do a progressive exercise program and report on overall physical activity, health, and psychological wellbeing. The intervention is expected to have a positive impact on these lifestyle factors.

Family Supportive Supervisor Training and Workplace Assessment Tool
Description

This study will evaluate the effectiveness of FSST 2.0 (family supportive supervisor training plus support for use of family and sick leaves) using a randomized control trial design. We expect the intervention will increase supervisors' family supportive and leave supportive behaviors, which in turn will increase employees' leave use and decrease employees' work-family conflict, emotional exhaustion, depressive symptoms, and turnover intentions. This study will enroll a minimum 200 groups of managers and their employees. Managers in the intervention condition will complete pre- and 2 post-intervention Workplace Assessments, 2 online training modules, 1 webinar where managers can review intervention content and ask questions and share reactions on the materials. Managers in the control group and employees in both groups will complete pre- and 2 post-intervention Workplace Assessments. The post-intervention Workplace Assessment will be completed 3 and 6 months after the intervention. The total duration of the study is 9 months as the wait list control group will be offered the intervention and 2nd follow up survey after the 6-month trial.

Mindfulness Rounds Initiative - A Short Mindfulness-Based Program for A Busy Workplace
Description

An 8 week course of mindfulness education and practices will be presented to all staff, patients, and visitors voluntarily attending the thrice weekly presentations. The goal is to reduce staff stress, improve communication, enhance patient satisfaction, and improve quality of care.

Description

The study is a multiple cohort, staggered-entry, waitlist randomized controlled trial evaluating the effectiveness of a comprehensive resiliency-based program in reducing stress for correctional officers employed by the Leon County Sheriff's Office in Tallahassee, FL.

Mobile-Web Emotion Self-management Tool
Description

The investigators developed a responsive mobile-web app, "Jauntly," which was designed to take advantage of the known connections between positive emotions, stress reduction and stress resilience. The app's goal was to lead users through research-proven positive emotion-enhancing exercises and relevant educational materials. Intervention activities covered five well-being-generating content areas: 1) promoting the experience and recognition of gratitude; 2) encouraging positive social relationships and feelings of social support; 3) improving stress resilience via mindfulness and other relaxation-focused activities; 4) focusing and capitalizing on individual strengths (as opposed to limitations and weaknesses); and 5) general positive mood inducing activities. Program content was adapted from a variety of stress-relevant research areas including health psychology/psychosomatic medicine, social/personality psychology, positive psychology, and clinical psychology.

The Use of Mentoring to Promote Well-being for Female SMART Members
Description

Women are highly underrepresented in the construction skilled trades. In addition to facing the industry's well-known physical risks, women are subjected to discrimination, harassment, and skills under-utilization. As a result, tradeswomen have increased risk for injury, stress-related health effects, and high attrition rates from apprenticeship programs, thus perpetuating their minority status. Mentoring is a well-established technique for learning technical and personal navigation skills in new or challenging social environments. The investigators propose development and dissemination of a mentorship program through local unions of the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers (SMART), and evaluating its success in reducing women's injury and work stress, while improving retention.
